What Our Expert Scouts Say

Papalote Mexican Grill
August 10, 2012

All meats are grilled fresh to order for their burritos, but the salsa is the real star here. We always have a pint jar in our fridge. Be sure to get the fresh stuff; the shelf-stable version is still good, but not quite the same. Bring back your jars for a $1 discount on the next one (or, do as we do and hoard jars.)

Great, healthy burritos. Papalote has a great selection of healthy, hearty burritos. The line can get really long, so be sure to call ahead.

Clean, fantastic food!. The fare at this restaurant has both great flavor, and a very clean feel. Nothing felt too heavy or greasy at all. The service was excellent (the cashier was extremely friendly and helpful). Great location, great ambiance, and great look. Highly recommended.

Also, salsa was fantastic! I got the veggie burrito and would love to go back and try something else. Prices reasonable.

Burritos, Burritos, and Tacos!. I love, love, love this place. The food is clean (no lard, not too greasy), and the salsa is spicy. Perfect for Saturday afternoons, after a Friday night out. Or take it to go and eat at home. Or take it to the park. Really, any time is a good time for Papalotes.

Awesome veggie options!. I read about this place in a NY Times travel article, where it said that this was the best place for a vegetarian to get a burrito in the Mission. Now, I must admit, I haven't tried the veggie burritos at too many other places, but that's because this place is so good! My favorite is the soyrizo, but I've also tried the tofu mole, which was interesting...I hadn't ever really had mole before, since it's usually with some kind of meat. It's usually kind of crowded for dinner, but it's awesome, and definitely worth it! The chilaquiles are good too, because they're covered in Papalote's yummy salsa.

Best Burrito in the City?. After I heard Papalote was voted the best burrito by Daily Candy, I had to try it. Even on a Tuesday night, the place was packed. My chicken burrito was good and ingredients were fresh, though nothing that stood out compared to other burrito joints in the Mission. Though my boyfriend's prawn burrito was really good. Still not convinced that these are the best burritos in the city -- I'm still on the search. But I definitely recommend checking this place out.

I Love Papalote. This is one of the best - if not completely authentic - burrito places around. Awesome salsa, innovative burritos, and friendly atmosphere. Plus, if you call 10 minutes ahead, you can pre-order your food for it to be ready when you get there. The best.

One of my favorites. The food here is delicious, I have gone back there 10-15 times. The salsa they have there is out-of-this-world. Very cute, warm decoration. More of a lunch, afternoon place (at least I think of it that way). Service is not so quick sometimes, but if you eat there they will bring the food to your table.

A vegetarian-friendly menu and vibrant decor make this nontraditional taqueria a favorite for health-conscious Missionites.. The Scene
Bright red walls, deep-blue wood floors and unfinished tables and chairs provide a simple, yet vivid, backdrop. Abstract murals, Mexican folk-art kites and painted crosses that deck the walls and ceiling add to the festive atmosphere. Attentive, super-friendly service encourages diners to feel at home.

The Food
This isn't a standard Mission taqueria--meat and fish are cooked to order, beans are vegan and there are nearly 10 vegetarian dishes. Fish tacos stuffed with moist, tender morsels of flavorful red snapper, delicately piquant pico de gallo and crisp shredded romaine, mesh contrasting textures to delicious results. Traditional entrees are also available, such as rich, sweet chicken mole and a bracing pork chili verde, which suffers only from the health-oriented leanness of the meat. Lack of lard leads to rice and beans that are a little bland. Fortunately, they can be markedly improved with the roasted house salsa.

A-M-A-Z-I-N-G !!. I can't believe that this place has been around for 5 years and I BARELY had a chance to eat there last night. The food is amazing - I had the shrimp quesadillas with the black beans - the hicama salsa is ridiculous and of course....the salsa is just bananas!!! I'm definitely going back to this spot more often. Very reasonable prices and the decor of the restaurant is beautiful!! I would encourage anyone to go and check it out when they're in the area. They've got a great variety of drinks/beer as well.
