Just north of Cesar Chavez on Mission is Nicaragua, a restaurant that I have been eating at for decades and which has managed not to mess up its signature dishes grilled or stewed pork with fried plantains, fried cheese, and cabbage salad on the side, or its (not piquant) onion and tomato salsa even through changes in ownership. The empenadajas (stuffed with cheese or with ground meat) are good, but the entrees are too filling for me to order (as are desserts, including tres leches). The carne asada (beefsteak) seems a bit tough to me. The fried whole fish is good, but the dish I go specifically there for is tajadas con chancho y queso. Whether stewed or grilled, the pork is tender and quite lean. (BTW, if you have never had it, yucca has less flavor than potatoes; indeed, none at all that I can detect. Not all Latino food is spicy hot!) The kitchen is slow. The waitresses are friendly (and bilingual) My main frustration is that I don't know why it is necessary to ask for tortillas when the good arrives, especially when I ask for them when ordering, but every time ... The jukebox can also be too loud. The decor is folk kitsch. The restaurant does not accept credit cards or checks. It is open daily 11am-9pm. PROS: pork CONS: blaring jukebox sometimes
