Yum Yum Yum.
Went to Puerto Alegre on a Friday night with a bunch of friends -- luckily we made a reservation otherwise we would have waited forever!
This place is definitely fun and great for groups. The ambiance is very lively -- they even have a mariachi band play for your table if you'd like.
The food is great! I ordered a combo plate (shared with a friend) and LOVED the tostada with shredded beef. I generally don't like shredded beef as it's usually pretty dry, but this was amazing. The spices, marinade, flavor!!! YUM!
Will definitely be back.
One of my favorite spots in Sf!. I love this place! Not only have I been coming here for a good solid 8 years, any friends or family that come into town I take here. The food is always cosistently good, the margaritas, awesome! I always laugh to myself when people walk away that don't won't to wait 45 min for a table. They have no idea what they're missing. We're not waiting in line for fun. It's really for the margaritas!
Fun but not that cheap. I don't know why people say this place is cheap as the prices are in the upper end for Mexican in the neighborhood. I had a good time though.
What a bummer. My boyfriend loves this place-- he's been going here for years and loves their margarita's and food. Me? I could care less-- I'm no snob but the food does not justify the wait for a table. Last night was the last straw for us-- we waited for 10+ minutes at their podium with the "please wait to be seated" sign, wanting to put our name on the wait list. The place was half empty and all the waiters were lazily cleaning/prepping tables. At least 3 of them walked past us several times without even acknowledging us. We are not newbie's, we know the drill-- the place always requires a bit of a wait, but COME ON. No acknowledgement? Even the boyfriend was ticked off. We decided to take matters into our own hands and just plop ourselves into a booth. Wow-- that was all it took to finally get someone's attention and we were told that people were waiting for the tables (though they must have all been at one of the various bars nearby because NO ONE was outside). When we told them that it wasn't cool just to keep us waiting here (ESPECIALLY when it wasn't even busy), and that they could have at least said "hey sorry we're a little busy we'll be right with you". They chose to ignore basic customer service and told us "that's why the sign says 'please wait to be seated' and didn't even ask if we'd like to be added to the list. Needless to say we left and went to a different Mexican restaurant two blocks away that has MUCH better food and customer service. I know this town is dying for more sit-down Mexican restaurants, but this one isn't worth the ice they put in their half-ass margarita's.
Fun place with unexpectedly good food. Since moving to SF a few months ago, I'd been looking for a place with good Mexican food where you could also have a margarita. This was the first one I found, and it was surprisingly good. First, however, my party had to wait a good half hour past the time of our reservation to be seated. After that, all four of us were happy with our meals; the margaritas were stronger than I expected but still good. I would say this is a fun place to go with a small group - it's small, very crowded, and noisy, but that's kind of what creates the atmosphere. Service wasn't top-notch, but I wouldn't expect that in such a busy place.
Awful. From the get go this place is bad. The hostess was so rude that we wanted to leave immediately but one of the people in our party assured us the food was worth it. We waited forever, the service was slow and the food was mediocre at best. I don't know what the people who gave it a good review ordered but we sure didn't get it. The margartias weren't bad but three of the four of us agreed they're not good enough to get any of us to go back.
Great Place, especially for English-only speakers. Authentic food, great margaritas, and a staff that won't lead you wrong. All the flavors of Mexico accessible to anyone who speaks English, something you won't always find behind the counter in the Mission District. The lines may be long but that's because there is no pressure to immediately turn over tables. So if you want to linger a couple of hours, you've earned it. Prices have inched up, but you get great value and those fantastic margaritas.
The best restaurant in San Francisco. 10 Years in San Francisco, and we've never found a more charming, more fun, and better restaurant than San Francisco. From the gracious host, to the mariachi bands, to the fantastic food (MOLE!), to the best margaritas we've ever had -- we promise to spend every special occasion here.
This place ROCKS!. If you want good cheap Mexican food this is the place! The margaritas are pretty average. They would be better if they used fresh squeezed lime juice instead of a generic mix and had a better selection of tequila. It can be annoying with the mariachi bands that allways come through but hey, thats part of the Mission! Allways crowded at night so get there early or be prepaired for a wait. You can allways order food at the bar if you can't get a table.
This is place is AWESOME!. Vintage, Cozy- this place is homey and the atmosphere is fun. Yes it gets packed in the weekends and nights, but that is a good sign... isn't it? It is worth the wait, believe me. The Margaritas are incredible and are a good deal. The food is traditional and delicious (try the Camarones a la diabla, Huevos Rancheros). The service is great, everyone is so nice. The only downer is the parking! But this place is really worth it all.... By far the best mexican restaurant in the city.
