Editorial Review for Laku – by Amanda Scotese
The Scene
Though it is, in fact, one of the most curious stores along the strip, this weathered, dim storefront is easy to pass by when walking down Valencia. Owner Yaeko Yamashita fills pastel shelves, cast-iron displays and rustic apple baskets with dainty, ornamental accessories and crafts. She may be engrossed in a project when you walk in, but eventually a pause in the soothing jazz may cause her to look up from her worktable.
The Goods
See Yamashita's signature scrunchy velvet roses on half the accessories in the store--Japanese-inspired slippers with prettily pointed toes, detailed baby booties, triangular change purses, hair ties and soft necklaces. Deep reds, blues and violets dramatically color woven berets, bucket hats and cloches. Only a select few items come from outside sources--check out pink and orange pillows ornamented with sequins and faceted beads or long, knitted sweaters.

Insider Tips
The ExtrasYamashita will make variations of her products, like a baby dress with special fabric, or an extra big hat.
