Composer-operator Stan Shaff's "theatre of sound-sculptured space" is a unique, often overlooked San Francisco cultural institution. On Friday and Saturday nights, visitors traverse past a lobby, down a serpentine corridor and into the striking, planetarium-like auditorium, where 169 speakers dangle from the ceiling and line the walls. Although chairs are set up in concentric circles, you may feel the urge to lie on the floor as the already dim lights fade to near-complete darkness.
