This family-owned and -operated neighborhood shop has been a destination for oenophiles, beer enthusiasts, connoisseurs of fine spirits, Russian Hill bourgeois and Polk Street drunks alike since 1965. The Jug sports a comprehensive anthology of wine, both Old World and New, and is critically acclaimed for their selection of Italian vino and internationally renowned for the most extensive collection of wine from Australia and New Zealand stateside. The staff, knowledgable and long tenured, is excited to educate and diversify customers' palates. Additionally, boutique productions of Scotch, bourbon, gin, tequila, vodka, apertifs and digestifs make this shop a one-stop haven for party-planning and home-bar needs. Don't forget to check out an ever-growing, seasonally influenced and impressive selection of Belgian ales, West Coast microbrews and kegs.

This is one of the best wine shops I have ever visited. The staff is extremely down to earth and helpful. When you say I want a recommendation for under $15 dollars, the staff, rather than treat you like you are some begger off the street, provide several recommendations and help you narrow your choices. Then as a big fat bonus, I have loved the ones they recommended. For the folks who are developing their taste in wine on a budget, this is the store for you. PROS: Selection staff CONS: need some signs to identify product more obviously

The Extras:
Wine tastings are periodically held at the shop. Call for a schedule of upcoming dates.
The Extras:
In-store tastings occur several times a month and offer unique opportunities to meet winemakers and experience rare, award-winning and exclusive bottlings. Occasional after-hours tastings are a special treat and still more Jug Shop tastings are hosted by nearby restaurants. Keep an eye out for intermittent and seasonal beer tastings, as well. A calendar of events is on the store's website.
When to Go:
No need to worry about a scarcity of booze for your Fourth of July or Fleet Week festivities--the Jug is closed only two days a year: Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
Parking:
Littered with meters and packed with Jettas, Saabs and Vespas, Russian Hill is perhaps the most frustrating neighborhood to park in San Francisco. Luckily, the Jug Shop offers its customers free parking in front of the store. After hours, this lot serves as hourly public parking for neighborhood restaurants and bars.
