Great authentic Italian in a comfortable spot!. This is the best authentic Italian place in San Francisco! Delicious and creative food, great service, good wine selection, and an overall great place to hang out and enjoy a meal. They get pretty busy on weekend nights, so either take advantage of their early meal deal or make a reserveration.
Well-prepared Italian favorites make this rustic trattoria popular with locals..
In Short
This neighborhood destination hosts a steady range of customers at its closely spaced tables, from young urbane couples to aging Russian Hill regulars in for an early dinner. Though it doesn't look particularly Italian, it is an attractive and comfortable space with dark-wood floors and wainscoting and a wall lined with a silk-cushioned banquette. Like any authentic Italian restaurant, the menu reflects the seasons.
FANTASTIC!. Went last night to a birthday party and ate some of the most wonderful dishes I have had outside Italy. Hats off to this restaurant for keeping the dishes Italian.
Great pasta. Had a beautiful meal with some friends here the other night. The service was excellent. I will definitely return.
Delicious Food, Excellent Service, Tasty Wine.. This little restaraunt is always consectuively good. The fish dishes are my favorite, and done to perfection. The appertizers have always been great. And the service is excellent. I always feel welcome by the Wonderful hostess, and the waiters and waiteresses. The chef is a very amazing chef, and definintely creates each and every dish with feeling and taste. It is a very nice atmosphere inside. It may get a little loud, but the food and wine are so good it takes away from the loudness. A great place for a date and/or to bring your family.
LOVED this restaurant. LOVED this restaurant-it was cool to go to a restaurant and feel so comfortable-like you were part of the family. Decor is warm and cozy with some bench seats and throw pillows. The staff is very friendly and accomodating and the service was excellent. The food was superb-some of the best Italian food I've had in the city. An extremely enjoyable experience that I'd highly recommend.
A Great Find. Incredible Italian food. Traditional dishes that have not been "fused" with any other cuisine. This place does not try to impress. After many visits to San Francisco we think this is the Shining Star of Italian food. The chef knows Italian food the way the Italians like to eat their food - simple and not over flavored. As others have mentioned - this place is "Authentic," "Not an American interpretation of Italian" and definitely not for people that can't enjoy the real flavors of this wonderful county (Italy, I mean).
Disappointed.
My friends and I had dinner here last week. The gnocchi con fonduta was too doughy and smelled of gasoline (does fontina cheese smell like this!). The pappardelle with wild boar ragout was just average. The melanzane parmaggiana was good. Both the sole and the halibut were forgettable and didn't taste too fresh. We enjoyed the ambience, but they were a little understaffed that night and the waiters seem to be new; at one point, the manager was scolding the waiter.
We had tiramisu for dessert, but the lady fingers were still dry inside and we couldn't taste any espresso or liquor.
The only thing I enjoyed was my glass of Chianti.
I wouldn't go back again.
Overrated. This one deserves to get booted from the Chronicle's Top 100 list. It's nothing special really. The carrot sticks and celery starter was pretty lame. The corn soup was excellent. The black pepper wide noodles with wild boar ragout was good but forgetable. The penne with spicy-garlic tomato sauce had far too much red pepper and our daughter could not even eat it. I like spicy food and this was way too spicy. For desert, forget about the coppa antica. Our waiter must have been new because he was really bad - excruciatingly slow and inexperienced. Would not return.
What San Francisco Needed.
If Italian, Italy style is what you are craving this is the only place to get it in all of the Bay Area. The food is incredible, the servers are knowledgeable, the wine list extensive. These guys did a great job at making us feel comfortable and the food and experience was awesome!
To address the portion size (as mentioned in an earlier review) - we felt it was a little too much food and took home a doggy bag.
