Authentic Thai cuisine served in a small but sleek Theater District eatery..
In Short
Dark wood moldings, spiritual-themed artwork and a prominent Buddha sculpture set a moody ambience in the orange- and red-toned dining room of this cozy restaurant. Swift servers deliver extra-spicy Bangkok favorites to diners with ultra-bold palates. Dishes include peanut sauce prawns, pad Thai and salmon filet with garlic and red curry sauce. A mostly Californian wine list includes nearly two dozen by-the-glass options alongside a short list of Asian beers.
A New Look for Great Thai Food. Recently went back to one of the few solid restaurants in this city. To my surprise, Ar Roi has undergone a design makeover and raised the stakes in Thai restaurants. The place is now simply stunning, changing from the subtle blues to attractive reds and oranges. But this only complements Ar Roi's already awesome food. This is why my friends and I keep coming back here. The restaurant looks different in the inside but the food is consistent as ever. Staple Thai dishes like their Pad Thai and curries and on the mark, but we love their specials, dishes which you can't really get anywhere but back in Thailand. If you haven't tried this place, you are missing out. With the new look, this is the place to impress now.
A great find. Ar Roi is a wonderful place that combines the comfort of a familiar neighborhood restaurant with the sophisticated elegance found in many restaurants in the theatre district. The nice and quiet ambience is a sweet relief from the hustle and bustle outside Ar Roi's doors; and the unique take on traditional Thai cuisine is a delicious treat at a very reasonable price. It's a great alternative to the more expensive and ostentatious restaurants that surround the theatre district.
Unknown but Excellent Thai. I've been to at least 15 Thai restaurants in the city and this is definitely one of the best. I would rank it right with Marnee and Thep Phenom. Two dishes my wife and I always order when we try a new Thai place are the chicken gra prao (ground basil chicken) and pad thai - both are excellent here, the pad thai is the best we've had outside of Bangkok. Based on another user's input we tried the Lemongrass Eggplant, which was very unique and tasty. It's a pain to park around there but well worth it.
Angel wings.
I am drooling by just the thought of angel wings from this restaurant... defintely check out their panang curry..simply the best...
try the bbq chicken, very tasty! I am willing to drive up to SF from San Diego for a few orders of the BBQ and angel wings... YUMMMMMMMMM
Great Thai Food. This restaurant has been catering to my firm for over three years. The one thing that has impressed me the most is the consistancy of the food! Always fresh and always delicious. Ar Roi has definantly proven without a doubt that they know Thai food and they know how to satisfy their customers. If you want to enjoy reliable Thai food don't hesistate on going to Ar Roi.
Excellent Choice. Amazingly enough, between the 3 Thai restaurants on one block, the only choice is this one, remember the lavender exterior color and white table cloths. This is the Thai restaurant that I go to for their specialty dishes. Some that I have tried; Lemongrass Eggplant - a banging dish lemongrass minced chicken and prawns over seared eggplant, Spicy Salmon - a rich garlic and red curry sauce over a salmon fillet. These are just specialty dishes, their regular menu hits on almost every dish. When dining there with friends, we always have to order the traditional Pad Thai, Spring Rolls, Satay or Som Tum. All these dishes are on a level above the rest. If I had more than a 150 words, I could just rave about the restaurant, unfortunately I must leave such a short description of a great restaurant.
Finally. money well spent. After eating at a lot of the Thai restaurants in this city, finally a restaurant that makes it just like home. Trust me, tried a lot of Thai restaurants in this city, seems like there's one everywhere these days. You can always judge a place by some main dishes, papaya salad (Som Tum), Pad Thai, Tom Yum Goong and Grapao Chicken. Ar Roi hits on all of these dishes, but always be more adventurous on the menu, their specialty dishes are easily something to come back for, I have yet to see another Thai restaurant more adventurous, where else can you find a curry with pumpkin (Sunrise Pumpkin) in it? And finally for once a restaurant that doesn't change the taste to a bland rendition, when you ask for spicy, they make it spicy. When people catch onto this secret, I might have to make reservations.
