Mandarin=YUMM!!. If you haven't tried the NEW Mandarin you are missing out on a fantastic meal served impeccably in one of San Francisco's most historic locations. The new management has dramatically improved the quality of food and the level of service. You have to try the soup dumplings, a unique dish that makes a fun to share appetizer. We had a larger group and shared several dishes including the crispy shrimp rolls, prawns w/ candied walnuts and smoked tea duck. The well stocked bar makes some of the best mixed drinks in town and the view of the glistening bay is a backdrop that can't be missed!
Excellent Chinese in a Nice Setting. The Mandarin is a great place to come if you want to get away from the crowds around Fisherman's Wharf but still enjoy amazing views of the bay & have great Chinese Food. The restaurant is beautiful.. the brick walls & candlelight make the place cozy. The wide selection, nice wine list & spacious surroundings make this a great place for a group, although there's plenty of great tables for two by the windows! The presentation is nothing fancy.. but fortunately you don't have to pay high california-asian prices either. The food & service more than makes up for it!
Love what they've done with the place.
When we arrived at our Fisherman's Wharf hotel late on a Saturday and were looking for a nice Asian restaurant still serving at 9 PM we ended up at the Mandarin (the kitchen was closing at 9:30 so we had to promise to order quickly).
In spite of the hurry, the service was attentive (and quick!). The restaurant was very beautiful. The old bricks and beams of the original building had been seamlessly blended with Asian woodwork, screens and art and rich tangerine walls. The feel was very warm and welcoming. The views are probably quite good on clear days.
The food was good, perhaps a little high priced.
Not worth it!!. This place is not worth it! The food was terrible and we would have been better off going to any local chinese restaurant for better food, service and value. The Mandarin is extremely overpriced for dishes that have zero presentation and little taste. We ordered a "house specialty" - mango & shrimp that was inedible because it was drenched in salt; a "velvet chicken" dish that was nothing special, along with an appetizer and soup - none of these dishes anything special. A bottle of wine and two bad cocktails put our bill at $100. My vote - skip this place.
Mediocre food, indifferent staff. Back in the 1970s the Mandarin was known for he "best" Chinese food in San Francisco, I am sad to report that this restaurant is no longer worthy of it's former glory. We ordered Hot and Sour soup, an eggplant vegatable entree, and aspargus chicken. The soup was OK, but both entrees were overcooked and drenched in sauces. The quality of the food was no better than that of a fast food Chinese vendor - mediocre at best. Our tab for 2 entrees & 1 appetizer, no drinks = $60.00. We waited 15 minutes while the waiter and manager figured out how to redeem the gift certificate we were using. The manager decided that rather than give us the difference between our gift certificate and our bill, that he would give himself a 30% tip!! Overpriced mediocre food and the staff is less than helpful. Have dinner somewhere else!
4th of July Blast. The food is out-of-this-world. Just try the Glazed Walnut Prawns or the Peking Duck! We also tried an array of appetizers- all wonderful and tempting for the the next course. Even though the restaurant was packed, our waiter was courteous and quick on his feet. Last but not least, the bartender mixes one incredible Mai Tai!
