A great dive - in the best sense of the word. I discovered this place on my hunt for a real diner experience in SF and I loved it! Great atmosphere, made nice and kitchy by the excess of holiday decorations hung from nook and cranny. Our waitress was very friendly and our burgers were just what the doctor ordered on that chilly day. We're looking forward to many returns.

My favorite!. Grubstake is my favorite restaurant in town. The service is attentive and polite. The food is awesome and the and the milkshakes are like something out of a dream. the inside is quaint, but clean. it's open quite late, but I've never been there past 2am. So if you want a good meal and a comfortable atmosphere to eat it in try out the Grubstake.

The railroad car setting and traditional American and Portugese cuisine draw an eclectic crowd to this Polk Gulch diner.. In Short
Housed in an old train, this cozy eatery's proximity to the bars and clubs of Polk Street draws a late-night crowd of drunken revelers. The extensive menu features all the dinner favorites, such as burgers and steaks, and the back page is devoted to Portuguese fare. Authentic dishes include codfish with potatoes, onions and hard-cooked eggs, and pork chops seasoned with white wine, garlic and Portuguese spices.

Yummy. I love this place, and the fact that it is open late! The food is super good and cheap. I love their burgers. Also I think it is the only Potugese place in town. Skip Mel's on your late nights out, and try this place for a change.

Love the setting!. My favorite aspect of this place (after being open super late) is its setting. The decor is very quaint and original, and I'd imagine that during the day the restaurant would be pretty mellow. I went on a Friday night at 2AM, so this was not the case. We had the pork chops in white wine and it was fairly good, flavorful. The sides to the pork chops were not good. I also tried the jalapeno poppers: the cheese inside was very creamy, which more than made up for the lack of spicyness. I will definitely come back, solely for its open-late hours.
