Bland Food, Bad Service.
I was a regular at the Rex cafe for four years. I went back after the remodel. The place looked nice but it no longer had a comfortable, neighborhood feel. The portions were tiny and the prices were much higher. My friend and I ordered four dishes and it wasn't enough for us. We also got bread and when we asked for butter and olive oil, our waitress replied "The Chef doesn't want you to have butter." I laughed and asked if the Chef was paying for our meal. The waitress proceeded to be rude after telling us that she forgot to place our order. After waiting for more than an hour, our meal arrived. What a joke! 6 pieces of bland gnocchi and a bland burger soaked in grease! Needless to say, we paid our bill and left and went to Za on Hyde for dinner. We won't be back.

Nice improvement!.
So I read somewhere in the SF Chronicle that the former chef de cuisine from La Folie was moving to the Rex. A bunch of us decided to go to try out the new food. It is so much better than the lack luster burgers and pork chop with polenta stodge from before. It's cute and fun food. The southern fried poussin and waffles had me rolling.

New chef, new menu, GREAT food!.
The Rex recently closed for 10 days to remodel the dining room and bar. They were also joined by a new chef John Pauley. The menu has also been completely revamped. I went there on re-opening night last Friday and liked it so much, I went back the next night with more friends! Everything I ordered on the menu was wonderful. The dishes are imaginative and fun, they are perfect for sharing so everyone can get a taste of each item. Just like before, the bar is great and the wine list has some really tasty additions! You have to try the chicken and waffles, the linguini with english peas, the pork belly, the fries (!!) and the chocolate cupcake dessert!! Actually, try everything, you will not be disappointed. The prices have not changed significantly, so this is still a reasonable meal considering the neighborhood and the quality of the food you're eating.

Brunch is king at this Russian Hill eatery known for comfort food and a laid-back bar scene..
In Short
Weekends draw a steady stream of neighborhood residents who come for bloody marys, four variations on classic eggs Benedict and specialties like the Rex waffle topped with Grand Marnier, strawberries and whipped cream. Nightly dinner inside the red-walled cafe means down-home dishes like meat loaf and the signature old-fashioned pot roast served at wooden tables arranged around a central bar. Large mirrors and work from local artists grace the walls.

Food was great, but service not.
I dined here for brunch recently and must say that I was surprised. The brunch food was good...make sure to try a bloody mary! But unfortunately, the service was lacking. The wait to get a table wasn't long at all, but once seated it took 15 minutes for the server to make it over to our table. When asked the server for water (which had to do twice), didn't receive them until after the meals had been dropped off. It took another 15 minutes for the server to bring us the bill once we had finished eating.

Rex is awesome!.
the food is awesome! its a little expensive, but its just because of the area it's in. brunch on saturday and sunday can be a little crazy, but the food is awesome and pretty quick. friday and saturday night dinners are super fun. everyone likes to hang out and have a few drinks and have some delicious dinner before their nights on the town begin. come here if you want a fun atmosphere with nice servers, good food, and great drinks!

A great place going down hill.
So you want a couple glasses of wine and a burger....Willing to pay 25.00 for a atomosphere that has declined then I suggest you dine at Rex's Cafe.....
Used to be my favorite neighborhood place to enjoy and dinner...The food is still very good..However due to the Political Correct Police I am not allowed to specifically comment on why I feel Rex Cafe has declined..I believe I am allowed to say the atomosphere has rapidly declined.

Consistently good.
One of my favorite places to eat in the city. The enviornment is cozy, the food is always good, and the prices are reasonable. I've never been for the brunch, but the dinner is great! Try their flavored vodka drinks if they have it when you're there.

Great Brunch Spot.
Rex's is a great place to hang out and lazy over a weekend brunch. We sat outside, so I don't know how the indoor dining goes, but outside, we had prompt and friendly service. They have variations on the classic egg benedict which are outstanding. The ham and jack cheese was good too--fluffy with tons of flavor. Try their Bloody Mary on the side.
