Great Location, Okay Service. Great place to meet friends, staff is sometimes rude tho'. Nice on a Saturday afternoon, can get a bit too crowded in the evening.
Crowded Outside, Loud Inside. I've been twice now, and the first time was great, albeit a bit loud in the back room. The last time, however, we tried to get a group seated outside, but there were only three tables and far too few chairs. When we moved inside, the music was blaring so loud with generic rock that it was impossible to hear anyone who wasn't adjacent to you and screaming. That's fine for dancing, but hard for a pub setting that should be about chatting with friends.
Unique space. Warm and comfy this place is the perfect pop-in for a couple - get out of the rain place. Good food doesn't hurt either.
Cozy and friendly. Yum. Chips and beer. Newbies to SF, my boyfriend and I have now visited the Irish Bank twice and have enjoyed it each time. A great pub, don't go there planning on having a quiet conversation, but enjoy the Guinness or many others on tap, full bar and great food. I can only attest to the chips with curry sauce, but the basket was large, the chips were hot and they were a great after-work appetizer with a Guinness before heading home. The rest of the menu looks great . . . busy and crowded but the bartenders are friendly and try to get your order to you quickly.
Why?.
I like Guinness too.
So why do I need to be literally squashed between ten million people to drink it? (That assumes I can get one - poor staff seem to have had it by the time they hit the throngs.)
Just not worth the irritation. Not even close.
Good food in a noisy place..
For the amount of money I spent I had an
excellent meal, but if you go after 5 p.m., by
all means go into the dining room because the
bar fills up fast and is very, very loud.
Nice place, but the music being played over
the pa system is about as Irish as the
4th of July (I think the "after work" crowd
likes it) and when the place gets crowded,
the small staff have their hands full.
Food & Foam are superior!.
Fish & Chips always outstanding, so have been a number of other dishes. Guiness Stout best on North American continent. Thursday nights frequently have a great surprise and it is free.
Ever seen a bar with an authentic antique confessional. See one.
We are senior world travelers who live in Hawaii. Whenever we are in SFO we make a few stops at the Irish Bank. It is always enjoyable. Many of our senior friends have joined us. While we are greatly outnumbered (by age), all have enjoyed the food and atmosphere. It akes years away.
How to test the quality of Strout: Initial the foam-if it takes and holds, the quality is tops. Here it is tops.
Great but needs tuning. Great bar - I've been every Friday except the last two, for about 4 months. Hope the owners read these reviews! You need faster service - just because the bar is packed, don't assume everything is fine. I've eaten there on a Thursday night, and it has taken FOREVER to get served even when the place is dead. And forget about charging $2 to get in for special events - it's such a token covercharge, why bother - it just annoys the regulars. And get rid of the panhandlers in the alley! But it's such a great pub I keep coming back. Oh yeah - mop the restaurant area floor - it's been sticky for weeks.
great guiness. We stumbled on this place by accident. Beer, service and ambience were great, bit dark though.
