Good food, cute atmosphere, awful management.
We stopped by this lovely restaurant for brunch on Sunday. We stayed about an hour, enjoying the warm atmosphere and pretty good food (great poached eggs, so-so quiche, delicious coffee). It was about a $50 brunch for the two of us. We were about 5-10 minutes from heading out when the waiter came and took everything except the coffee cup that I managed to hold onto. In another two minutes the manager came and said that he had people waiting and that he had to ask us to leave immediately! If he'd given us a warning, or just asked nicer, we'd have been fine with it, but we were just kicked out. Coming back from the restroom, I saw three other empty tables in the rear, that they hadn't seated anyone at the table next to ours, and that no one was waiting up front.
For $50 plus tip brunch for two, I expect to get an hour at my table. It was appalling treatment, and completely undeserved. They seem to be more interested in turning over tables than in repeat business. The wait staff had earned their tip, so we couldn't stiff them. But the manager was completely unapologetic. So there's no recourse for such bad behavior except to warn you that you might be treated the same.
So sad REALLY bad.... ...we just spent a week in San Fran and with rare exception, we had great food and terrific service...Cafe de la Presse was one of the exceptions...slow service and an uncaring air, over priced- barely average food and a cash register/podium attending manager? that stood and watched the poor service without a word to the wait staff. I did try to look around and see if there were others suffering a similar fate...I did notice that what seemed to be regualr patrons were treated much more pleasantly and with quicker service than those of us out of towners...I did note too that not many people were actually eating the over priced food ( $40 for a light breakfast for 2) but were sitting sipping the poor quality coffee and chatting amiably. I would definately give the Cafe de la Presse a pass and keep right on walkin'.
Good French bistro/cafe selection. Comparable to numerous places where I've eaten in Paris. Onion soup was disappointing, but entrees (cassoulet and boeuf bourginon) were very good and desserts were excellent. A bit pricey, but on the whole well worth a try.
Kronenbourg 1664 on tap and great food. Was on a business trip recently and stayed at the Triton next door. Decided to give this place a try and thought the food was quite good, I found the service just fine but I have worked at restaurants. I noticed one reviewer that gave it a horrible review gave two places horrible reviews on the same day so I thought I'd try to balance things out, Food was good and they have Kronenbourg 1664 on tap. Only place I have been in the US that does. Sat outside and had a nice conversation with some wonderful people from Iran. Great experience. Going back with my wife in a couple of weeks.
Cafe yes!. Although it is not quite your typical perisan cafe, the windows let the light pour into this corner hotspot. The breakfast menu boasts a short but sweet selection. Our food arrived promptly and was reasonably priced considering the portions. Grab a newspaper, and enjoy a bite to eat in this delicious and relaxed space.
This place is gross!! Rude and mean staff!!. I went with my Mom who was visiting. We asked if we sat ourselves and the waitress snapped"Yes"!!! I was taken aback. Much to our surprise she was our waitress. The whole time she was taking our order she carried on a conversation with another waitress, laughing and talking. When she got to the computer to put in the order she and her friend were laughing and looking back at us. Now here is the best part. My mom who overweight went to the bathroom. While she was walking to the bathroom I saw the same waitress laughing at her. I also saw her make a comment and another employee laughed. I was so mad. I got up, and when my Mom came out we left. I did not tell her. She is old enough where she gets tired. Her health is not so good, so that is why she is overweight. I actually had to hide my tears from her. I did not want her to know what happened. I took her to Rotunda and it was nice. The staff was polite. I was so angry I wanted to puch out the staff. I hope this place goes out of business!!
Coffee, Alcohol and Dinner. After having difficulty finding a seat for one at nearby restuarants, I walked into Cafe de la Presse, starved and happy to find a table. The panini offerings were limited but the prosciutta and smoked mozzarella with tomato panini was decent. There could have been more meat on the sandwich but the panini was nice and thin with a crisp outer layer and the cheese was evenly melted. I also ordered a hazelnut coffee-- coffee with a shot of frangelica liquor and fresh whipped cream on top. It was perfect! There were at least 5 other coffee-liquor offerings, making the choice rather difficult. Some unique combinations to be paired with a simple fodd menu. The service was young and at times didn't seem to know what ingredients were supposed to go into the drinks. The clientele was a good mix of young and old with several tables of young children.
Cafe de la dePressing. This places is lame. Service was horrendous. I have to sit between two people crushing me. And the waitress never found me, until I flagged her down. Finally she seemed put off. So I got my lame-o salad and she never brought water, never bread and I had to get my own fork and napkin. When I asked her for these things she brought one at a time. I felt like a prisoner of war. I couldn't move and my crappy salad in a bowl was very crappy. I then after forever got my steak and fries. It was overcooked, and the fries were cold. So I sent it back. I didn't get it back for a half an hour!!! And when I did it was again overcooked and the fries cold!!! I asked to just go. So she finally brought the bill after talking to her friends about getting drunk the night before. When I got it the steak and fries were still on it. I had one bite!! Just one!! She took forever to get it taken off. i will never step foot in this horrible place again.
great french food high prices. extremely overpriced. if you are on a date and the other person is paying, i would give it a try. the best part is the tartes )small and delicious) and the deserts (french specialities). the atmosphere is really cool and hip. a great place to sit outside, drink wine, smoke, and look intellectual.
weak service and management that didn't seem to care. Fourth time my family or I have been to this restaurant. Perhaps it was the 20% for six or more that made our waiter scarce. Staff removed plates along with my daughter's fork. After 7 or 8 minutes we simply took one from another table! Desert was served ten minutes after coffee. Food was basically ok, but not up to previous standards. The worst was that the matre d didn't seem to care, mumbling something unintelligible when I told him what was wrong. Based on service, but particularly managment response to a service complaint, I won't be back.
