Editorial Review for Virgin Megastore – by Mark Tompkins and Jesse Will

In Short
Virgin's selection of pop CDs is comprehensive--and the store's reputation as a haven for imports is well deserved. The electronic music section is extensive, littered with hard-to-find titles from smaller West Coast and international labels. Pop culture definitely rules the book selection; and the DVD and multimedia sections are strong as well. The chain' biggest selling point may be the multitude of listening stations that allow shoppers to check out loads of new CDs before purchasing.

The store is cluttered, difficult to navigate. The salespeople (??) are indifferent to the point of rudeness. The overall atmosphere is one of suspicion (more guards than clerks), the mood harsh. Noise levels nearly intolerable. Decor garish. Prices full retail. The CD or DVD selection is not particularly impressive. Why on earth ever go there??

Pros: Location

Cons: Noisy, Unpleasant, Unwelcoming

Considering Virgin is a huge chain, I wasn't expecting such a considerate, helpful staff, that not only walked me up and down each aisle, helping me find everything that was on my list, (yes, I had a list!) but the guy who helped me actually recommended some other record stores that might carry the albums I couldn't find at Virgin. I thought that was very cool. He cared more about getting the music I wanted to me, than to sales. (not that I didn't help boost the economy that day.. hehe..) Anyway, to make a long story short, I was impressed. Maybe I just got lucky, and asked the nice guy who knew what he was talking about, but it worked out perfect for me. I guess it also helped that we had the same tastes in music, but still.. I'll definitely be back again.

Pros: The listening station, Import section, Friendly staff

Cons: , Always busy
