Overpriced Mexican Food!.
We, a party of 6, came to this restaurant based on the recommendation through CitySearch, which we're an avid use of.
Unfortunately, the rating did not live up to the billing.
Overpriced Mexican food. Service Lousy.
Guacamole - lacked both salt and lime, keys to good guacamole.
The Sangria did not have fruit and cost $28 per pitcher.
Entrees portions small.
Service--What service. The waiter forgot to bring several items to our table. Moreover, the waiter had no personality and no opinion on items on a menu.
Overall, this restaurant has a nice atmosphere; however, the food at El Torito Grill is more authentic and tasty.
Impressed. I wasn't sure what to expect for upscale Mexican and after reading other reviews, but I took a gamble and tried it for a business lunch. Everyone loved it! The food and service were excellent; the ceviche, pork quesadillas and both prawn entrees were all wonderful...even the sorbet desert was delicious. I can't wait to try Maya for dinner.
Sometimes disappointing.
I've eaten here several times, mostly for lunch. It's a beautiful spot, and a pleasant escape from the office, but the food hasn't always met my expectations.
On the good side, the guacamole is some of the best I've ever had, as long as you have plenty of iced tea. It's on the spicy side.
One night, I had salmon ceviche that was outstanding, but the next time I was there, it was just OK. And their tortilla soup is like no other I've had. It came barely hot and tasted like flavored tomato soup.
But I know several people who only have excellent things to say about it. I'll definitely be back, but I think they could work to make the food better.
Best Mexican!. The fish dishes were awesome! The halibut and red snapper dishes were complemented with delicious sides and the coconut cheesecake for dessert was incredible! The service was average and rather slow for early dinner but the ambience and great food made up for it. Definitely no burrito place here!
Don't eat here. I've been excitedly waiting to try Maya. Unfortunately, I was disappointed by high prices, mediocre service, and bland food. A house margarita comes in a small glass and is $6.75! They refused to accomodate a very simple vegetarian request that even the most economical of Mexican restaurants in the Mission have been more than happy to. When I did get my appetizer-entree, someone had dumped too much fake smoke flavoring in--it was inedible. I will never go back here.
a tastebud adventure.
truly a wondrous experience. Imaginative combination of spices, some of which I had never experienced before.
Use your sense of adventure and you won't be disappointed.
The service can occasionally be spotty and I'm not sure our waiter quite understood our questions concerning Chilean wine, but this did not detract from a stellar treat for the tastebuds
Stick to the taco truck.. Unimaginative taste and presentation masquerading as "gourmet" Mexican. What a disappointment.
Viva Maya!. I never thought of Mexican food as fancy, or anything truly special. I was happily surprised to find the food unique, and mouth-watering not to mention the exceptional service and menu pricing. I had a shrimp and langostino dish. The shrimp were large and perfectly cooked, although I only had one small langostino. They were served in a bowl atop a paste type of sauce rich with flavors and spices. I would highly recommend Maya to anyone looking for that "hidden treasure" in Mexican cuisine! ~TigerSF
Disappointed!. My husband and I went to Maya for his birthday. Possibly expectations were higher than normal because it was a celbritory night, but Maya was a big disappointment. The food was good, I really enjoyed it, but my husband thought it wasn't the best. The service was terrible (don't ever sit outside in the evening, you'll be forgotten about), and my husband had to go and get someone in order to pay our bill. Overall, it was not worth the money.
Amazing!. Ok, one of the most amazing meals I have ever had! I just decided to be adventurous and choose a dish, and it was absolutely amazing. I had the Camarones Azteca and I highly recommend it. I also had some ceviche and it was incredible. I highly recommend it.
