What People Are Saying About Limn

Featured Review

In Short – Limn, an old English verb meaning to draw or illuminate, could arguably be the best furniture store in the country. Opened in 1981, the SoMa-based store (all 46,000 square feet of it) offers a mix of high-end designer furniture, original artwork and a whole lot of inspiration. You'll find furniture believed only to be found within the pages of a glossy magazine. With an emphasis on the modern, Limn represents more than 500 designers ranging from the retro-future stylings to hand-knotted Tibetan rugs.

Editor's Tips

Parking:
Limn offers free on-site parking for shoppers.
The Extras:
The art gallery adjacent to the showroom can be rented out for events, so call the store for details.
Fun Fact:
Bolstering the art explosion is Limn's Magazine of International Design (launched in 1998) and Limn's curated art gallery that's adjacent to the showroom.

Unique furniture

by fb234 at Citysearch

LIMN is a unique place in the Bay Area. The furniture and accessories offered are the product of many years of research and knowledge of European and American design and their enthusiasm for unique products shows. There is also an emphasis on quality manufacturing. I purchased my first upholstered item from LIMN in 1985 and it is still in good condition. I visited the new store recently and noticed there are many local designers with one-of-a kind products. There is no other furniture store to offer this range of high quality and unusual and daring products.

BUYER BEWARE

by Leise at Citysearch

BUYER BEWARE LIMN COMPANY SAN FRANCISCO - Limn Company is on a credit hold from many of it's distributors. My husband and I have purchased several very expensive items from Limn, recently a 3 piece B&B leather sofa set that was 3 months overdue for delivery. The latest and most disturbing is an order we placed in August of 2008 for an Extra Wall Bed by Living Divani - Apparently, the bed is complete, though Limn Company has been placed on a Credit Hold by Living Divani, so our bed is not being shipped out to us. We have a $6,000+ deposit on the bed since August of 2008. It is now April of 2009, and we still do not have our bed. Dan, the owner, will not take, nor return our phone calls. Buyers beware of your next purchases at Limn Company...you many spend thousands of dollars in deposits, with excuses for late deliveries, if indeed you receive your purchase at all!

  • Cons: LIMN ON CREDIT HOLD

Legendary Design Mecca

by cityshopper23 at Citysearch

I was told by a friend about LIMN years ago as a legendary design mecca. It's truly a delight for fans of modern design. This place has everything from sofas to tables to amazing Bulthaup kitchen systems and one of a kind art objects. Had a wonderful experience during my search for the perfect sofa. Fortunately, I was able to find something I loved that was available off the floor as oftentimes a custom ordered sofa from their stock can take up to six months for delivery. The salesperson I worked with explained that most of the manufacturers they work with are based in Italy (where arguably the best modern design furniture in the world is created) and furniture made to order of course can take weeks to make and months to reach the West Coast by ship. Lead time is a huge consideration when purchasing an important piece of furniture. You must be prepared to wait for greatness or else go shop at IKEA!

worst sofa experience ever....

by popshop at Citysearch

we had a very similar experience with this store. only, after custom ordering our sofa from italy, it took us (i'm not kidding) 3 years to get it!!! and then, (it gets better) they actually expected us to still want it~you see, at the time of the order, we had the money, no problem but hey, 3 years later, we didn't! we just thought they forgot about us and so didn't trip (they loaned us a sofa after we had waited 6 months! and that sofa because almost ours for those long 3 years...).so, they pulled up a truck and took the loaner sofa away....after the woman on the end of the phone YELLED AT ME FOR 5 MINUTES ABOUT HOW WE HAD TO BUY THE SOFA SINCE WE ORDERED IT....i finallly said, lady, you're yelling at me and you have no right to whatsoever...you people dropped the ball so bad now it's your problem....

honestly, would any business owner think that a customer would wait 3 years for a piece of furniture so necessary as a sofa????

do yourself a favor, and just don't go unless you can have them promise you you won't have this kind of experience that we and the previous reviewer had!

don't throw caution to the wind!!! you're been warned....

  • Pros: beautiful eye candy furniture
  • Cons: can't seem to buy it and actually receive it! ie, HORRIBLE customer service
