A townhouse among skyscrapers, Alexander Book Company's size and specialty collections make it a welcome alternative to the city's gargantuan bookstores. Host to numerous book-club meetings and author appearances, its three stories feel like a community as much as a store. Though it stocks mass market releases and calendars, its appeal lies in its collections of African-American and children's literature.
