In Short
Airy, industrial decor lends a lighter, more urban feel to Gordon Biersch than most beer halls. The bar may get crowded after 5pm, when a happy-hour crowd hoists a few pints of seasonal Bavarian-influenced beers. A menu of fusion and New American dishes include beer-friendly offerings like shrimp and chicken pot stickers, Moroccan-spiced lamb chops and the signature garlic french fries.

Insider Tips
What to DrinkThe seasonal beer menu has three constants: a hoppy pilsner; an auburn, slightly sweet marzen; and a malty, dark dunkles. True to German form, centuries-old "purity" laws are followed, meaning only hops, barley, yeast and water are used.

A coworker took me here a few weeks ago, and I'm disappointed I didn't say no, as there are SO MANY amazing places in San Francisco...but I was tired and just wanted to eat. I was pleasantly surprised by the beer selection and their generosity in offering a flight of beers for tasting before we made a decision on what to order. The menu was typical of this kind of chain, and the quality of food matched that. I really hate to be a snob about restaurants...but considering the cost of the food, you can do SO MUCH BETTER. Really. I ordered a steak that, while cooked to my liking, was very boring. It had gristly bits in it and lacked any strong meaty tastes. The vegetables on the plate were especially sad, just a collection of steamed veggies - about what I'd get from a frozen Green Giant box. Now maybe I'm expecting too much, but for the same price, I could have such better food elsewhere. The server was almost a parody along the lines of the waiter in "Office Space." And the host/hostesses were snooty, given that this is just a gussied up Applebee's with a brewery. I wouldn't go back unless I just wanted greasy appetizers and beer.
Pros: It's in San Francisco
Cons: Mediocre food, so-so service

Very friendly welcome and excellent service, along with great food made this a welcome stop. Worth seeking out for beer geeks, beer is German style instead of the usual ales found at brewpubs. Food is also a welcome change from the usual bar and grill fare - portions were also extremely lavish, so come hungry.
