What People Are Saying About Sushi Groove South

The Scene – Those in the know push past the restaurant's unmarked doors. Inside, the cave-like interior buzzes from the DJ's beats and stylish SoMa holdouts sip sake-tinis while waiting for tables. Sit at the sushi bar if you want to see your food; tables are lit only by flickering wall-mounted votives. – – The Food – Though the menu's focus on rolls may steer sushi purists away, innovative creations keep the loyal masses begging for more. Nigiri, while adequate in quality and selection, suffers from scanty portions, so stick with the inventive rolls. Choices are…

Terrible Dining Experience
by mae a at Citysearch
Tonight my dinner at Sushi Groove South was hands down the worst dining experience of my life. I am not one to declare such a sentiment commonly, and to place that label upon a establishment that I have enjoyed on so many occasions in the past is not easy. On so many levels I feel let down and dismayed at the abysmal service and lack of resolve on the part of Sushi Groove and it's employees on this day 09/01/2010.
We made reservations for dinner and arrived promptly at 9:30pm. After standing for about ten minutes waiting(with not a single party in front of us), a hostess emerged and seated us with two menus in tow; sans the regular special menu which normally is included. This was 9:40, at 10:10....yes 10:10, a half-hour later water glasses we're placed in front of us. Looking around us we began to notice many frustrated diners and sensed that something was awry, but because of our good experiences in the past we made the choice to stay and be patient in the event it was just a slow night.
10:25 pm, 45 minutes following our arrival a waitress arrived and took out drink order, saying nothing about the wait or thanking us for being patient. We we're polite and placed our drink and dinner order. 10:45 pm, drinks nowhere to be found. We flag down the waitress, who replies to our inquiry "Oh.. I'll try to track them down..." Another ten minutes and she arrives with our drinks, a beer and sake, not mixed/cocktails, a beer and sake. Sake and Beer do not require preparation, let alone a half-hour.
By 11:00 pm we are finally served ONE of our rolls. The waitress then asks us if we want any more sushi as it is last call, mind you we have not even received half of what we originally ordered. We ask her if the rest is coming and she replies "Oh... I'll go see if it is...."
Needless to say when the next dish arrived and it was something completely different than what we ordered, we politely asked for the check.
At this point almost two hours had gone by, which one would think would be appalling to any respectable establishment in terms of waiting time forced on a customer, and our waitress brings us a check for the full price of our drinks and the one dish we ate. In this situation a complimentary meal would have been appropriate, but to charge the full amount on half a meal served over two hours??? Wow.
Needless to say I am disgusted by the lack of service and resolve on the part of Sushi Groove and will never, ever be dining here again. Completely astonishing and sad.
Horrible Horrible Serive! I will never eat here again!

I'm a local resident who doesn't go out to eat as much any more because an experience like this ruined eating out for me in gerneral. I didn't expect fine dinning only a hip little sushi bar since that's what my friend told me to expect. There was nothing wrong with the atmosphere, it was indeed hip, but I can't believe some of the girls they hired as servers. This was indeed some of the worst service I've ever had. She knew almost nothing about the menu, was incredibly rude, and seemed to be on "something". After looking around it seemed like a large percentage of the serving staff was on "something"(I don't know this for a fact but it seems highly likely) Anyway orders were forgotten. We were forgotten, and we felt very insulted for spending money here. As I left i tried to remeber the server's name so I could write to the owners, but realized she never introduced herself. But she was blonde and not very nice(understate of the century), I can't imagine she'd still be working there but if she is I feel sorry for whoever else sits at one of her tables. I enjoyed the food, but other places of similar price offer better quality and selection without having to deal with the kind of service I had to endure. I'd like to think it was only an off night for a server but several people I spoke to had very simmilar experiences. So I don't recommend this place to anyone in fact I say avoid it like the plauge. Because of this experience I'ved turned over a new resolution to cook more at home, so I never have to deal with an experience like this again.
- Pros: Nothing
- Cons: Service
Re: Rude Hostess

I have experienced the rude hostess as well and was very surprised. I have been eating at Sushi Groove on Hyde for three years and have started to go elsewhere because I had the hostess literally laugh in my face when I came in without a reservation of a Tuesday night.
- Pros: Great sushi
- Cons: Awful service
Rude Hostess
by vaportrail at Citysearch
I've been a Sushi Groove regular for many years--Even before I moved less than a block away three years ago. The constantly changing staff has lost the neighborhood feel. Last night I was rudely turned away even with empty seats in the restaurant. Hostess was rude and uncaring.
I live 600 feet away, and I wont be back. Sad.
Fresh Sushi, unique atmosphere

I visited this place when in town on a business trip after a recommendation from a friend. I read the reviews on Citysearch and totally agree - this place is small. I saw several parties waiting. I sat at the bar and received excellent service from the Sushi Chef. The sushi was incredibly fresh and i was pleasantly surprised by the amount of fish in my sushi roll. I asked my waitress to call me cab when i was finished. She actually walked down the street and hailed one for me. Now that was worth the price of admission!
