The Scene
Once you spot the giant rocketship suspended from the ceiling, it's clear that Get Lost takes a playful, adventurous approach to travel. The two-story shop near the Castro is packed with useful trekking aids and offbeat imports that will appeal, even if you have no intention of leaving home.
The Goods
Of course, you'll find the standard travel guides (from funky Lonely Planet to stodgy Fodor's), explorers' memoirs and maps for destinations from Australia to Zimbabwe. Pack smart with a money belt, mini-umbrella and refreshing Bucky brand buckwheat airplane pillow. It's the exclusive local outlet for Australian Crumpler bags and stocks a wide selection of popular colored Nalgene water bottles. Upstairs, a rental shelf is packed with tourist department videos and episodes of "National Geographic Explorer." The front table features books by authors who've recently read or hosted slide shows, and the section on local destinations is especially strong.

This is a fun little bookstore that excels in customer services, they are very open to helping you find whatever you need. They will hold your books for you and search all over the store trying to find the books you need. I got some great books here for the same price as if I had gone to a bigger bookstore, but with the quaint style of the store and the location, it has some great travel books for traveling across America and Canada. It has giant maps avilable there to buy, along with small handbooks. (very handy)

Get Lost has carved its niche as the place to go for travel books. It makes sense that people of this metropolitan area yearn for more exotic or more rustic locales, and Get Lost feeds into the natives' fondness for leaving the big little city. The advantage is that they carry a lot of books that you could probably only find on the internet. And when it comes to the Internet, you can't really see INSIDE the book. Get Lost's an independent bookstore, so it's cool to support.
