Citysearch Editorial Review – Sandwiched between a smoke shop and a cheap lingerie store, Kaplan’s brings a friendly breath of air to a skuzzy stretch of Market Street. The government surplus and sporting goods store is a San Francisco institution that has been family-owned since 1939 and located in the same storefront since 1965. Save the small tropical fish tank behind one of the registers, there’s not much pretty about this spacious store; many of the displays are little more than a bunch of stuff overflowing out of a cardboard box. Still, the staff is helpful and the deals cannot be beat. Levi’s jeans run $30, Converse All-Stars are $42, and just about everything else from Nike’s and Giants jerseys to the military flight suits and camping gear is priced to move. “We’re not fancy,” says one of the managers, Chris, as he nods towards the giant shopping mall a few blocks down, “we’re just trying to be competitive.”
