Editorial Review for Bell'occhio – by Steve Baratz
The Scene
Evocative scents, esoteric musical offerings and an attentive staff create a total sensual experience. An in-house calligrapher gives all the store's signage and printed materials an elegant flourish. Bell'occhio is known for its extravagant gift wrapping and detailed presentations of every package and bag that leaves the store.
The Goods
Inside this space, you'll be whisked back in time to an era of European elegance. The store's light, airy ambience is punctuated with merchandise surprises, like antique ribbons, Parisian face powder, bath and beauty products, rare imported chocolates and teas and unusual gift boxes. Lots of little things evoke another time, such as a carefully pressed antique love letter with flowing French handwriting. A goose-down powder puff could be an impulse purchase or gift.

Bell'occhio is without question one of the most unusual stores in the US. I do a lot of shopping and speak from considerable experience. Not only is the merchandise very carefully selected and presented with limitless imagination (e.g. a cordon of Marie Antoinette dolls, with little goats on fine ribbon leashes, making their way across a vintage metal bridge, itself a little structural wonder) but the knowledge of the friendly store staff about everything in the store and old-world craftsmanship in general is really astonishing. This is a resource unlike any other. They have had custom shoe boxed made to fit my obstinate closet and made memorable party favors (and wedding favors) for friends. Don't miss this store. It is one of a kind!
Pros: Great atmosphere and Wonderful Merchandise
Cons: Closed Sunday and Monday
