This 300-plus-seat theater is accessible through the potted-palmed lobby of the Sheehan Hotel. While its proscenium stage and graduated bleacher seats make for good sightlines, the action can feel distant and remote in this cavernous auditorium. A typical season might include revivals of prestigious dramas by playwrights such as Ntozake Shange, as well as popular jazz and gospel musicals and world premiere scripts by rising or established black playwrights. The annual "Lift Every Voice" series celebrates the African-American oral tradition, featuring guest actors such as Danny Glover.
