Best cut and color. I have been going to Gene since 1995. The haircuts he has given me over the years have earned me compliments in New York, all over the US, and Europe. I'm an opera singer who travels for my work, so it's important that I have a look that's unique to me and stylish as well. Gene is always up-to-date on the latest cutting techniques and coloring methods, and he's always been honest with me about what will look best as well as being willing to give me what I want. He's a true artist, a caring human being, and he has surrounded himself with other great people in his salon. I've proudly sent numerous people Gene with wonderful results and will do so again and again.
Gene rocks the free world!. Gene is not only an amazing hair stylist and color expert, but he is the owner of this salon, and is an amazing guy to boot! I just read a review someone wrote on 6/7/07 who rated this #1 salon in town a 1-star salon, and I wanted to set the records straight. The staff has been extremely friendly to me, and it's been a great experience thus far! For the last 2 years, I've been going to Gene for my hair cut, and yes, he is booked 4-6 weeks in advance for optimal appointment slots. And yes, all the stylists are busy because they are excellent at what they do. Gene is honest and forthright about what he thinks looks good on his clients -- and I for one, appreciate his candor. He advises for and against certain cuts that I am considering, and ends up giving me a fabulous cut every time. He is also such a caring person that he ran out and fed the meter for me (with his quarters, not mine) the last time I was there to make sure that my car won't get towed. Gene, Michael (the receptionist), and the other stylists are such kind people, I don't believe there is a mean bone in their body. BTW, in case you have bangs -- no one has cut my bangs better than Gene! One advice if I may: If you are new in town, start with Gene. I wish I did.
Gene Rocks! Best hair salon EVER.
I've been going to Gene since 1990 and he is the best. Over the years I've sent probably 20 people with a variety of hair types and styles, and they've all been thrilled. In fact, my girlfriends and I have to carry business cards because so many people ask where we get our hair done. We have such a great time at Gene's that three of us book our haircuts together to make a girls' day of beauty. In fact, we even show up to hang out even if only one of us needs a cut that day!
He is a perfect professional and loves it if you bring a picture so he knows the two of you have the same vision for your hairstyle. He'll let you know what he can and can't do for your hair, and will suggest how to modify a cut to make it work for you. He makes sure not just each cut is perfect, but each hair is in it's place! He'll develop a relationship with you to make sure he knows you and can give you the style to match your personality. He's given me everything from a super-short pixie cut, to a short bob, to shoulder length hair, and I've loved it all.
I've followed Gene to 3 different salons before he opened Mes Amis. If he ever leaves the area I'll be devastated - I wouldn't trust anyone else with my hair!
Steer clear of Mes Amis.
Unless you like your hairstylin' mean, snotty and FULL of attitude, steer clear of this one!
I read the other reviews and found them bizarre: everyone said how friendly the salon was. Someone even used the word "laidback!". My experience was very different.
I had color and cut done a few times here with Hugh, who was always grumpy, but talented with blonde highlights. Hugh left, and I made an appointment with Gene. I arrived twenty minutes late, (BART train+traffic) apologized, and Gene glared at me - it was clear I was NOT forgiven. The he told me that because I was late, no cut, and only a few highlights. I admit: I was a bit taken aback and incredulous: could he please reconsider?? He snapped back, I don't have time to stand here and argue with you, so, make up your mind. I slunk out into the street feeling deeply bad. Then came back to apologize again for my lateness but to say I thought he'd overreacted and he'd been a bit mean. He proceeded to tear a strip off me: kept asking "What do you want me to do, aplogize to you because you were late?" and kept repeating "You know how busy I am, I'm booked out 6 weeks in advance, I don't have time to stand here arguing with you." By now, I was crying - it had been a wickedly bad day already - and I said I would be INSANE to come in and get my hair done after he'd yelled at me and been so harsh! He made it clear he couldn't care less, I was just another client, he has hundreds, he was too busy to care etc. The BEST ever though was when he said he didn't have time to stand there and play "psych games" with me and that he was not going to apologize for how he was speaking to me. So, I left, and I went to Elixir, where the staff are ANGELS - kind, lovely, ladies that know how to do hair super well. This kind of unpleasant ego trip - I'm a super star hairstylist and can act like a diva - went out with Visal Sassoon in the 80s. Too bad Gene doesn't know yet.
Go for the haircut, stay for the banter. I've been going to Gene at Mes Amis since 2001. People always remark on my "sassy" cut and color afterwards. But the real reason I keep going back is the fun, no-pressure atmosphere. No snotty stylists with arched eyebrows here...when Gene is on, he is ON. Why not have a good time at the stylist? I look forward to each appointment. Highly recommended.
great cut and highlights in a convivial urban hip atmosphere!.
I have been going to Mes Amis for about 5 years. I was in yesterday for my current usuall cut and highlights. people always complement my hair cut and style and those who know my hair always admire the subtlety and variation in the highlights. To others I just have pretty hair and thats how I like it. I always refer Mes Amis to people but I thought I would spread the word on a broader note. Gene makes my hair look great! if your in need of the styling muse Gene will breeze through with suggestions and mutual dialoug to arrive at a style that suits your quirks and style desires (Me I do not like my hair in my face but I want it long )
Voi La I have long hair and its not in my face. Gene worked with me and made me look good! The service is always timely, friendly, professionl. The atmosphere is urban hip. Michael always calls a day or two in advance to confirm an appt. which Is great! No Palm poilet for me. And last but not least Michael will be happy to run your quarters to your meter if you cannot!
Best color work in town!. I have been going to MesAmis since it opened and have had Gene cut my hair since 1981. You couldn't ask for a more professional stylist. He listens to his clients and makes suggestions based on your preferences. And noone does color better!!
The Worst Haircut Experience. Tiny cramped and destroyed my hair. Who are all these reviews from?
Best hair cut and the best atmosphere to go with it.
I started getting my hair cut at Mes Amis when I first moved to the city and I can't picture getting my hair cut anywhere else. Gene was not only nice, but he became a great friend.
Gene, Michael and all the Mes Amis staff are very good at what they do. They are always on top of things and, before you look in the mirror and think "hmmm, I need to get my hair cut," you can expect to get a call from Michael about your pre-scheduled appointment.
Not to mention that the atmosphere is great. Elegant, cozy, clean...
Best razor haircut. Gene is fantastic. No only does he do a great hair cut and color but he makes you feel comfortable from the moment you walk in. I have fine hair that is usually hard to work with but he did a great job. With so many salons in the city it is great to find one I want to stick with.
