Pleasant Surprise!. My husband and I decided last minute to stay the night in SF on New Year's Eve. Knowing how things work in the city, we knew that we'd either be paying big bucks for a decent hotel in a good location, or we'd be staying way out in the outer regions of the breakers. To my surprise, I found Hotel Beresford--in the heart of Union Square--for a mere $109/night, and there was vacancies! We didn't know what to expect, but we were booking it regardless. To our surprise, it's a charming little place, with an old world feel. There's the White Horse pub and restaurant adjoining, and the hotel is a family-run business. Additional pros to the price was the hospitality of the staff--there was a complimentary bottle of Korbel for each room, in addition to decorations and party favors for NYE. The only cons to speak of are the fact that the place is severely low on amenities--the place smells like each room was chain-smoked in & there's no room service or in-room fridge--and we had a room that backed up to an alley, where a totally blitzed dude was serenading a trashcan. The pros, however, definitely outweigh the cons!

A comfy throwback to old, English style.. The Scene
You just might feel as if you've arrived in jolly old England. Chandeliers and English-style furnishings adorn the lobby, and the on-site White Horse Restaurant & Pub is an authentic replica of an Old English tavern. Just two blocks from Union Square, the location couldn't be any better. It is perfect for visiting nearby theaters and shops, as well as hopping on the cable car for points further out.

The Details
This seven-story, 114-room property is family owned. While it has style, it has not been over-designed by a professional decorator. Rather, it feels comfortable and homey, albeit a touch dated. The property was repainted and re-wallpapered three years ago, and the rooms are clean. They include honor bars, satellite TV and fridges.
