With a fresh makeover and a new name, this Union Square hotel blends old-fashioned Edwardian charm with modern amenities..
Formerly known as the Cartwright Hotel, this welcoming three-star property was completely refurnished and restored in mid-2008. Catering to both out-of-town business types and vacationing couples, the space is a welcoming retreat from the frenzy just a few blocks away. While each of the 114 guestrooms, including 5 suites, now feature Larkspur signature FeatherBorne beds, contemporary wood furnishings, flat screen TVs, free Wi-Fi and toiletries good enough to take home, the structural elements remain the same (narrow stairwells, small elevator, windows that actually open), creating an experience that is at once nostalgic and modern. Guests can relax in the lobby while reading the paper or watching passersby through the large windows; cozy up next to the gorgeous fireplace and play a game of chess; travel back in time while perusing the old black-and-white photos hanging on the walls; or simply enjoy the complimentary fresh-baked cookies every evening. After all, this is home away from home.

Hmm....
Having just come from a hotel with large rooms, bay views, multiple elevators, ice machines, and all the amenities one could hope for in a hotel room, the Cartwright was a bit of a shock. Parking is $40 a day valet, or you can self-park for $17 at a parking lot a block or so away. The rooms are very small and the bathrooms even smaller. The bedding was clean but at a minimum. The view from our window was a trellis festooned with fake ivy and flowers in an attempt to screen the windows from the offices next door. The A/C was effective but noisy. The hotel is currently undergoing rennovations, and I was woken by the noise of hammering and drilling (this was at like 10am but still...). There is also a lot of noise from the street and the trolleys. All this being said, the staff were very welcoming and helpful. The rooms may be small but they are clean. And of course, the location is absolutely prime for tourists - the trolleys are literally a stone's throw away, and lots of attractions like Union Square and Chinatown are within walking distance. Tons of food places to choose from too, from deli sammich joints to upscale bistros. The Cartwright is perfect for people wanting to get out and about, and not spend too much time in their room. I would, however, recommend waiting for the rennovations to be completed. XTREME!! m/

Union Square Delight.
This boutique hotel has location, location, location! It's two blocks off Union Square, half a block from the Cable Cars and next to the Theatre District. The rooms were small but comfortable, staff was friendly, and the price (less than $100 a night!) couldn't be beat! I would definitely stay here again on my next SF getaway.
