Editorial Review for Stratford Hotel – by Gayot.com
The Scene
While many discount hotels claim to be in Union Square, they are in actuality Union Square adjacent, a few blocks into the seedy Tenderloin District. This place, though, is actually on the square itself. It provides a perfect location for exploring San Francisco on foot. Chinatown is a quick walk away, and the cable car to Fisherman's Wharf is just outside the door.
The Details
The hotel was renovated in 1997. The lobby is bright and cheery but doesn't offer much more than a check-in desk. Rooms are similarly informal in style, with solid whites and yellows complemented with modern beech furniture. Basic amenities like cable TV, coffee makers and hair dryers are included. A continental breakfast adds to this small hotel's advantages, and a pass to a nearby fitness center and lap pool sweetens the deal.

I made a last minute reservation for my parents, who were coming into town the next day. I spent a few hours calling dozens of hotels on a Friday afternoon and couldn't find anything for less than $250 per night....and then I came across the Stratford Hotel, located RIGHT in Union Square. The super cheap prices made me very nervous, but I decided to give it a shot. We could not have been more pleasantly surprised! Yes, the rooms are small, but to anyone who has travelled in other parts of the world, the rooms are no smaller than a typical European Hotel, and the prices can not be beat! The rooms are clean and modern. This great little hotel was definitely a find, and I would recommend it just about anyone, unless you are travelling with children. Great for couples or people travelling alone.
Pros: Inexpensive, Near Shopping, Food, Easy to Park
Cons: Small Rooms

I am a seasoned traveler of N. America and Europe. I definitly do not always stay in the most swanky hotels, and I like to take advantage of deals when I travel...so I guess I got what I paid for. But, what I saw in the picture was definitly not what I got when I arrived at The Stratford. The reception area was sparse, but clean, and it was not until we got to our room did I want to break down in tears. The room was 8x10ft if that, and the sink was 1ft away from the end of our bed. The toilet and shower were reminicent of going away to camp as a kid, and those camp facilities were cleaner and less scary! My advice, don't stay here. There is no deal to be had here!
Pros: cheap, cold breakfast
Cons: small beds, smelly & scary, camping is more fun
