The old Sage was a full-on Chinese Restaurant. The new spot (at least since 2009) is a coffee and sandwich shop that happens to serve a few nice noodle bowls and steamed pork buns. The coffee would please your average mid-western senior citizen (so -- it's not so bad), but the sandwiches are well made, simple and delicious. I am a big fan of their breakfast egg-and-sausage muffin special: said muffin (a more idealized Egg McYouknowwhat) and either a small coffee or a freshly-squeezed OJ for less than $5. Also: couches, free wifi, and lots of natural light.
General chos! Cheap lunch!.
Great General cho's Chicken- Very fresh. Fantastic Vegetable medley.
Unbelievable lunch prices. Great service. My favorite lunch spot in Hayes valley.
Fast, Cheap and Not Out of Control. Granted there is nothing particularly special about Sage except that it is reasonably priced, with fast and friendly service. There is rarely a crowd here, which is perhaps why some avoid it in a neighborhood of interesting eateries. But, for neighborhood locals it is a perfectly acceptable choice for a quick meal. The menu is typical fare, but you'll find less variety than the usual twelve page Chinese menu. A table in the front window provides for decent Hayes Valley people watching. Takeout portions are rather skimpy.
