The Bay Area isn’t exactly an enclave of gun-toting NRA-supporting zealots, though a trip to Jackson Arms may suggest otherwise. It’s not uncommon to find shooters outside the drab stucco bunker-like building early on Tuesday morning awaiting the 11am opening. Aside from a pile of magazines at the back that you probably won’t find at your dentist’s office (Field and Stream, Rifleman) and the Harley-Davidson for sale in the corner, Jackson is a no-frills operation. Customers can rent everything from 9mms to semi-automatics and purchase firearms and accessories. The 12 lanes are well-lit and ventilated while the staff is friendly but, unsurprisingly, packing. Leo, the rangemaster, carries a loaded .45 on his hip. “I don’t mess around here,” he says.
