Warning - Don't fall for it - a major hustle – WARNING! This place is a hustle. When I picked up the car (20 minutes outside the airport) they did the 'walk around' and notated over 35 (35!!!!) dings and dents so I would not be responsible for this trashed vehicle. I did not use their insurance, opting for my Signature Card visa and this got them bent. So, upon return they conveniently found two chips in the windshiled that were my repsonsibility at $50 (CASH!) per chip. Clearly this was in appropriate and, of course, I had a plane to catch. But I was able to ward off 2 couples at the shuttle pick-up and got them to reconsider. Betty W. owns this franchise and her agency is not even listed on the Payless locater web page. Pay $2 ;more and go with the reliable folks.
Completely dishonest and deceptive staff. My husband and I both rented cars within a week of eachother, and were told different policies on paying for gas. My husband was charged a fee for a full tank of gas that he didn't use, and wasn't notified he was being charged for the gas until he received his bank statement. Upon arrival to pick up my car, I was told (after my online payment totaled $70) that i had to pay for a full tank of gas and was prohibited from adding gas to myself from external vendors. I only had a 3 day car rental and of course had no need to pay for a full tank of gas, and ended up paying upwards of $50 dollars for gas that stayed in their car. Their online payment representation was completely deceptive and their staff was unsympathetic when I expressed my concerns. I was also given innacurate information about insurance coverage from their staff. Avoid this place!
Go elsewhere! Cheaper is not always better! – This is one of the crappiest car rental places I've ever used, and I travel a lot. I happened to get a traffic ticket while in CA and got charged $25 by them for "processing fees" (making a photocopy of the ticket and forwarding it on). OK, fair enough. I had signed an agreement saying that (although they sent me a photocopy of someone else's agreement, not mine). Anyway, they charged me the $25 twice and I've spent the last month trying to get it reversed. The 6th time I talked to them they said they couldn't reverse it, but that I'd have to dispute it with my credit card company (!!!) - 8 calls later I just got it reversed.
Also, their shuttle was "broken down" when I was there (or perhaps they don't have one judging by other reviews I've read with the same story) so the guy that picked us up was just in some passenger car - no sign, nothing. Almost didn't get in because I didn't know where the car was from. When we drove up to the door, we all got yelled at by an employee who told us we needed to "move that car right away." We were all a bit confused and then told him that it was his own driver who parked it there. Guess he didn't recognize his own driver or the makeshift shuttle car.
Everything just seems a bit sketchy there. Oh, and like some other reviewers, my car was really dinged and scratched up, too. Thank goodness they didn't try to pin that on me!
Oh, and P.S. for those from out of state. Don't run a yellow light! If you get at all caught when it turns red (even if you're almost through the intersection), you get a photo ticket. My red light ticket cost $466 (the standard amount).
Horrible Customer Service – I made a reservation for a car with these guys they had my flight number and time of arrival and my plane was delayed. I was still at the corner for the customer service shuttle way before they closed and yet they never showed. Not only that but they closed and I had no car. What ever!!
Editorial Review – Providing affordable car rentals since 1971, while offering everything from economy to luxury cars, along with full-size vans.
Payless San Bruno, The Mob doesn't have a racket this good! – I had the same experience with this company as a lot of people. They hurriedly inspected the car, which was still wet from the car wash and checked in a shady enclosure. I barely drove it and employee checked for damage in the sun and he found one tiny ding in the top of the trunk. He said I would have to fill out an accident report. He said the owner make him do this all the time, but "don't worry, they'll research it". They sure did, two weeks later I got a bill for over $2,500 for damage all over the car; the hood, front bumper, doors, etc. I thought it strange that their rates were half the cost of everyone else, now I know why. Please rent elsewhere!!!
Lots of Hidden Charges (you end up 'Paying More' - that should be their name) – When making my reservations online everything was fine. Once I went to pick up the rental car, that's when the charges came in - when I didn't have the resources to go anywhere else. First you wait forever at the airport for a shuttle to pick you up (semi-normal), however there were additional charge surprises on the pick-up and many more surprises when I returned the car. They even claimed "oh I can't believe the last salesperson didn't tell you that" - after they already had my credit card to charge. I warn you DO NOT use Payless!!!
