ALICE'S RESTAURANT

Don't waste your time or your money

My Girlfriend and I ate at Alice's on a recent Sunday. I have been eating at Alice's for years, so I know not to expect great service, but now the level has dropped to the downright obnoxious. After ordering, we waited 35 minutes for our food; in that time, not once did somone come to the table and apologize, or say anything for that matter- once, my girlfriend's coffee was refilled. The restaurant was busy, but certainly not 'packed'. The waitress walked around in no hurry what so ever, and the service, when it finally arrived, was quite simply unpleasant. The food was horrible. I had a 'Mexican Scramble'; it tasted as though they had opened a can of enchilada sauce and poured it over the eggs, as well as some mass on the plate that I assume was hashbrowns. The toast was saturated in some margarine-like-food-stuff, that rendered it inedible. The only decent thing on the table was the bacon, once one pulled away the fat. When the bill came, I knew I would not be returning any time soon; for our simple, really bad breakfast for two, the bill was over $34! Don't bother going up the hill, there is much better food in Redwood City.
p.s. I noticed another reviewer said that this is the Alice's of Arlo Guthrie fame; It is absolutely, and unequivocaly NOT the Alice's of Arlo Guthrie fame. That Alice's is (was) in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.
You pay extra for syrup with your French Toast or Pancakes.

I have never heard of that! No warning, it just shows up on the bill! An extra $1 for syrup. No, not a whole lot, but it is the principle. French Toast already costs $6.50, pancakes are $7.50. Unbelievable!
Folksy with good solid food

Good, solid road house food. Fantastic sliced prime rib sandwiches, hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, etc. Soups are made on premises and desserts come form a local bakery. Breakfast is also good.
Located in the heart of the Santa Cruz mountains. Service is friendly and efficeint. Lots of outdoor seating with much of it under cover (in case it rains).
I have moved to the area fairly recently and Alice's has become my regular place.
A note for Arlo Guthrie fans. This is the Alice's of Alice's Restaurant fame. The place is packed on weekends as this is a gathering place for all the bikers that ride the twisty, narrow roads of the Santa Cruz mountains.
- Pros: Local charm, Good food, Colorful clientel
- Cons: Croded on weekends, Noisy on weekends
