Editorial Review for Los Altos Grill – by Laura Reiley

The Scene
This hotspot serves sophisticated American cuisine in a Craftsman-style bungalow. A rotisserie cage at the front of the restaurant fills the air with the smell of Western beef back ribs and herb-rubbed chicken.

The Food

Bandera County, in Texas Hill Country, has been dubbed the cowboy capital of the world. But the grub that Los Altos rustles up is hardly the cuisine of the Old West chuck wagon. The young professionals who throng the U-shaped bar are equally focused on the cakey skillet cornbread, grilled artichokes with remoulade, and the oversized house margaritas.

Food is good here. Love the chicken and the salads. Great wine list! Waiters/Waitress are wonderful. Hostess' not so much. Not a good place for kids though.

All thanks to our horrible Server I will not return to this restaurant (and I used to love this place). Our Server barely spoke to us when she arrived at the table. She spoke just enough to get our drink order (not asking about appetizers) and then prepared to bolt. My sister stopped her and she mumbled them off as quickly as a rodeo auctioneer might sell a horse and then took off without allowing us an opportunity to ask more about the specials. She mentioned Scottish Salmon (now maybe I am a culinary moron but this was the first I have heard of Scottish Salmon). I didn't know if it was a designation of where the Salmon came from or if it designated how it was prepared. So, when she returned with our drinks I inquired as to what Scottish Salmon is. Her answer...a short laugh clearly letting me know I was an idiot and then a reply of "Salmon". No kidding? Salmon means Salmon? Huh! I finally got her to tell me how it was prepared and she even treated my like an idiot for that. From that point on we only saw her when she dumped off our appetizers, when she happened to pass by and we stopped her for lemons for our fish and ketchup for the kids fries and when we told the Hostess that there was a hair in my nephews grilled cheese sandwich. Oh and when she picked up the check. We told her we didn't need change but she was so busy running off that I guess she didn't hear us. Obviously, she didn't like our tip because she dumped the change that we didn't need on the table and took off without a thank you or goodbye or anything. I think she was lucky we even tipped her 18% but being that I used to be in the serving world I have a hard time tipping under 20% normally. Although, I couldn't bring myself to give her 20%. This place used to be fun to go to with great food but the hair in the kids meal and the horrible Server is enough to stop me from ever going back. I also intend on telling everyone I know how horrible it was. I'm definitely not going back!

Pros: The ambience is great; food used to be great but decent this time

Cons: Service, Service, Service

The meat-heavy menu is big and hearty, and the clock is emblazoned with the words, "Time to eat."  See the full editorial review.
