Looks old from outside, but great food!. At first glance, the place looks old and a little run down but the place has great food and great service!

Very nice food, awesome deserts!.
I think if you like continental food, this is a great place; some things, like a Caesar salad, are prepared table-side. The meat dishes were excellent, although I prefer much more authentic spicy foods myself. The deserts were excellent, make sure you try the souffle'!!!!
Overall, it was a nice dining experience.

Get your European fix elsewhere.... After hearing about improvements done, I decided to give this place a second try after 10 years. Unfortunately, despite the hype I hear I was still very disappointed. The oysters I ordered for the first course tasted as if they had been opened hours ago and just made to sit on ice. My sole entree was ok but a bit overcooked. And the chocolate souffle was was a white souffle with chocolate suace. The wine selection is marginal and our server was inattentive and haughty. Given the quality of the items-- it was definetely not worth the the cost of the final bill.

Continental Cusine at its Best. Now that the days of The Blue Fox, Ernie's, The Squire Room (Fairmont Hotel), etc. in San Francisco are long gone, making way to all the Alice Waters rip-offs, The Iron Gate is the only remaining great Continental Cuisine restaurant left in the Bay Area. Classics like Tornados Rosini, Veal Oscar and Cherries Jubilee, among many others, are prepared to perfection. Many of the dishes are prepared or finished table side like the Caesar Salad (the best ever), the Pepper Steak and Crepes Suzette. How come there are no other places like this anymore? Its not worth the drive up to the Bella Vista if you can go to the Iron Gate. Also, for all you California Cuisine lovers, if you want to eat a low calorie meal, stay home! Its' okay to gluttonize on occasion.
