live music, great bar atmosphere
by chefbum at Citysearch
St. James Gate is somewhat hidden in an area of Belmont on Old County Road which is actually a straight, long road running along El Camino Real and home to mostly small industry-type businesses (machine shops, body shops, electronics, etc.). You'd never guess that any bars at all exist there, let alone more than one.
Well, there are more than one, but this is the best one. Great live music most of the week, especially now that Art and Rhonda are hosting jam nights on Thursdays. If you're fan of 70's and 80's classic and hard rock, this is the place that you can hear it. I believe that local band Brother Buzz, a really fun rock 'n' dance band also plays there occasionally.
The bar itself has a very inviting atmosphere and a good-sized outdoor patio with another outdoor bar area for summer fun. I think that 107.7 "The Bone" hosted one of their live bone-bash parties there last year, and I bet it was a lot of fun. Overall, "The Gate" is a convivial, non-pretentious, funloving and music loving place to hang out.
St. James' Gate
- Pros: fun, great live music, good atmosphere, good service, neighborhood bar
- Cons: location hard to find, parking nearby can be a little scarce
Live Music on the Peninsula
by franko13 at Citysearch
Live music 4 nights a week without a cover charge...that rocks.
Cool outside bar for the smokers and a midnight tri-tip BBQ on friday and sat. nights.
Friendly local folks with all the color that comes with it....an atypical local bar.
A cool local mid-peninsula oasis...2 blocks off 101 at Ralston Ave. exit.
- Pros: Live music, dancing and food...safe environment
- Cons: gets crowded on fri/sat nights
