Editorial Review for Flying Fish Grill – by Eleanor Jones
The Scene
This small 40-seat restaurant is situated on the lower level of the tony Carmel Plaza shopping area. Japanese minimalist decor is livened up with ornate Balinese animals on the walls and colorful flying fish hanging from the ceiling. Owner-chef Kenny Fukomoto and wife, Tina, often mix with guests, while friendly staff is eager to suggest a favorite dish, recommend sake or offer day-trip destinations.
The Food
In an inspired (and irresistible) Asian take on chips and dip, meals start with fried wonton chips dunked in fresh ginger salsa with minced tomatoes, cucumbers and cilantro. Both prawn and vegetable tempura and spring rolls are decidedly ungreasy, fresh and crunchy. Shrimp curry soup is complex and flavorful. Nutty and crispy on the outside, moist inside, the almond-crusted sea bass is deservedly popular. Although the restaurant is known for seafood, even a New York steak is top-notch.

My wife and I had dinner tonight at Carmel by the sea restaurant called The Flying Fish. What an excellent pick, we had (2) entrees, (1) appetizer a bottle of wine and one dessert for $115.00 dollars. Great value for the money the service was great, the food was excellent and we had a very romantic dinning experience. Highly recommend, (Nashville, TN)
Pros: Food, menu selection, Asian Seafood, wait staff
Cons: no outdoor eating

Wher do I even start, my Husband and I did the walk in thing at The Flying Fish Restaurant on a monday night. We ordered the Shrimp curry soup excellent value at $7.50 for a heaping bowl. The house appetizer was fried wontons with a red chili sauce, excellent... I ordered the 9 oz lobster with curry rice and steamede veggies, and my Husband ordered the house speciality of chillian sea bass... we had a bottle of wine and the entire tab was $107.00 dollars. What a great value, the food was excellent, the ambiance was very romantic (fireplace dinner side). The service was excellent, there was zero wait time and the food was really good... what a gem of a find! definitely a place to come in the future!!
