Editorial Review for Henry Miller Library – by Steven Jenkins
Overview
Following his notorious years in Paris as an expat writer whose love of literature was matched only by his love of sensual adventure, controversial writer Henry Miller settled in Big Sur. He continued to explore themes of sex, passion and liberty among the rivers and redwoods of his new home. Following Miller's death in 1980, longtime friend Emil White transformed his own woodframe house into this modest yet lively library.
The Experience
Handwritten notes, drawings and paintings by Miller adorn the walls alongside a "Henry and June" film poster and all sorts of fascinating Miller ephemera. Books by Miller and other groundbreaking writers are for sale; buy one (all proceeds go toward maintenance of the library), wander out to the sculpture garden, find a sunny spot on the lawn and spend the afternoon according to Miller's credo: "To be always ecstatic. Be filled with a divine intoxication."
