Editorial Review for Lucia Lodge – by Steven Jenkins
The Scene
There might be fancier accommodations around Big Sur, but none have quite the same charm as the Lucia Lodge, which happily retains a 1950s motel-kitsch feel. Quiet except for the occasional playtime screams of a toddler or two, the lodge is a peaceful, clean, comfortable place to spend a couple of nights stargazing and rejuvenating your tired body and mind.
The Details
Each of the 10 coastal cabins sports a stunning view of the rugged coastline below. Three cabin styles include the four original freestanding accommodations on the cliffside, a row of four newer cabins closer to the mountains, and the two most modern rooms located between the two. All units offer a single queen-sized bed, but you might have more fun in the honeymoon cottage. Each of these self-standing suites features a sitting room, a four-poster bed and a gas fireplace.

Even if you don't choose a cliff-side cabin, you still have a fantastic view of the ocean (sadly, no ocean access). This is not a super fancy place but it's quiet, romantic and cozy. Also, where else in the area will let you stay for just one weekend night?! Breakfast is much more than a basic continental. Check in and check out is at the lodge's store which seems to always be busy, so staff isn't super attentive but they're friendly enough. Also, it's just over 20 miles from the heart of Big Sur. All in all, I'd be happy to return.
Pros: view, comfy bed
Cons: remote

We stopped here to get a room around 6:30PM. We told the reservationist it would be perfect b/c we'd been camping and needed showers/dinner and didn't want to have to drive. At this point she should have warned us that the restaurant/bar closes between 8 and 8:30PM, even on a Saturday night. We took our time getting ready to go to the restaurant but when we got there they were closing down. I asked the waitress if we could get anything to eat and she said, "Maybe a couple of salads." but she was extremely miserable about that. The next day the free breakfast was served until 10AM. This is fine but once again nobody told us anything when we checked in. For $175 I would hope to get that tiniest morsel of information. They obviously don't expect repeat customers so they don't care how badly tourists are treated.
Pros: Location is awesome, Rooms are nice, Bathrooms are nice
Cons: Restaurant hours, Unhelpful staff
