Editorial Review for Incentra Village House – by Gayot.com

The Scene
This Greenwich Village guesthouse may be the closest to a home away from home that you'll find in the city. Occupying a townhouse that was built in 1841, the property feels like a big residential apartment building. The living room is scattered with periodicals and has a roaring fireplace and plenty of antique furniture. The friendly staff will provide an orientation on the area.

The Details
Each of the guest rooms is unique. They are named after destinations the owner is particularly smitten with or specific types of artwork. For larger groups or those in need of extra space, the Bishop Suite offers the most amenities. It also has garden access. The Stonewall Room, located in the basement, is dark and dungeon-like, while the India Room is decked out with eight-armed goddesses and tranquil Buddhas.

This hotel has the potential to be great - it has a wonderful location and the staff seem to have good intentions. What it lacks is polish. I made a booking for my father when he visited a few weeks ago, mostly because it is close to where I live. To be honest I felt embarrassed when we were showed his room. Whilst the decor is classic, the curtains are faded and tatty, and everything looks a bit tired. Maybe that's why there was such a lack of decent lighting - a vain attempt to hide the state of disrepair. It wouldn't take that much effort to press the sheets before putting them on the bed, but apparently that was too much to ask. The bed was also uncomfortable, the windows were thick with dirt, and the bathroom was basic at best (with particularly bad water pressure). I wouldn't recommend staying here unless you have very modest requirements. At least until they just spend a little money on the place.

Pros: Location, friendly and welcoming staff

Cons: The rooms
