When I have folks ask me for an easygoing restaurant with a view, Butterfly is one of my recos. Good hot apps, like the Kalua pig and chili chicken wings, and mains like the grilled hanger steak “kalbi style" and Kurobuta pork porterhouse. Wine list was recently revamped--some strong picks on there.
Great place to dine with a view without being in a tourist trap.. Just enjoyed one of the best dinners in a view restaurant. Every thing was great about the restaurant. Very relaxing atmosphere and very friendly and well trained wait staff. The appetizers were incredible. I recommend ordring a few and sharing. Entres were well portioned, great presentation and very tast. The place is a bit on the pricey side but the value is there. Desers were incredile and good to share as well. I was hisitant to dine here after reading a couple of the negative reviews but the reservation was already made for us. Glad we went. Don't know what happend to the people with the bad experience. Maybe an off night perhaps. Worth a try. Try to reserve before it gets dark so you can enjoy the view
Avoid at all costs; disgusting food, overpriced, gross.
This restaurant deserves to fail. It's overpriced and gross -- not sure where people get the idea that it's a decent restaurant. The food was greasy, oily, overcooked and made me sick -- the same kind of sickness that you get when you eat too late at Applebee's and they haven't changed the grease trap. The chef also has no idea what to do with beef -- we ordered a "kobe beef" burger where you couldn't taste the beef but merely the oily drip, and had some hangar steak that came chopped up in tiny, burnt little pieces that were more "well done" or even "crisp" than the rare and medium rare we ordered. As for salads and vegetables, the tomatoes were colorless and insipid -- and this right in the height of summer when you can't turn around without bumping into a juicy, sweet ripe heirloom tomato. Whatever food was acceptable was pretty standard applebee's stuff -- fried calamari, a potato gratin consisting of cheese and flour (no artistry there whatsoever). The appetizers seemed more acceptable, if only because the chef shares SF's obsession with pseudo-fusion food and so thinks that anything fried can be made fancy by the addition of chipotle, lemongrass or both.
On top of that, the service was slow and took way too long for food that was utterly simple.
Please, avoid at all costs! Save yourself the money and go to applebee's. and if you do go, bring some alka-seltzer to cut the grease afterwards.
Lousy Food, Sloppy Chef.
OK so I am trying to be fair, but this place is just really off the mark. If you are someone who cares about good food, it is quite unacceptable. Cold spring rolls?? Lukewarm breast of Peking Duck? Manager was eating up at the bar during service? Common, this is a joke. But one that will cost you! Our bill was $90 for a glass of wine each and an entree each, NO apps, NO dessert, BIG ripoff. To top it all off the chef was a crass and borderline rude asian man drinking shots at the bar. Obviously he doesn't care either. The bar and dining room were pretty much empty for, as we now know, good reason. The food and execution are a joke, just way under par for this city. But since I am trying to be fair, there was a nice view. Only we were told we could not have the table on the window, then a few minuites later a couple at the bar were given it after pointing it out and asking for "that one". Maybe friends of the slobby chef drinking at the bar?
Hmmmnn. If offered a free dinner thee? No thanks.
Butterfly just does not seem to care..
It's a shame when you think you have found a great spot to dine and have a nice evening, then it goes sour on you.
We really enjoyed Butterfly last time we went. We sat at the bar for a late lunch after walking around the embarcadero and had cocktails, which were priced right for happy hour and pretty tasty. We shared oysters, shredded pork rolls with lettuce, and some duck spring rolls. We heard they have jazz some nights, too. The bartender was friendly and we left smiling.
We went back after making a reservation on Saturday. I think I was just expecting too much, but there was no love. The food was really sloppy this time, and while our server was very sweet, she even seemed embarrassed at the way they kicked us off our table so they could clear the room for a party! We had just barely decided we weren't thrilled with our entre when we were told they were going to have to take our table in a few minutes! What kind of restaurant is this? Aren't they interested in making their guests feel comfortable? I guess not. With that kind of attitude the food better be right on, and it's not.
A hastily run and sloppy restaurant. I recommend you take your chances elsewhere. Butterfly just doesn't seem to care.
new spring menu...mmmm.
A hot spot in my neighborhood that I haven't dined at for quite some time is Butterfly.......and I decided to pick it for a girls night out. It was sooo good! Our server told us that they had just switched to their spring menu and pointed out all the new items. I had the scallops with risotto - very springy and fresh. Our server was also very knowledgable about the wine list and recommened some great wines that are made at small vineyards nearby.
The desserts we ordered were to die for! Try the chocolate torte or the banana bread pudding - they were perfect; not too rich, just right! Also, the owner/chef stopped by - very cute and personable and so nice!
We are definitely going back!
Disappointed... Could have made it at home....entrees lacked spark & flavor. My husband and I were expecting interesting, delicious new flavors and a beautiful setting but we found the view was nice but not something to rave about... the calamari appetizer was very good but the rest of the meal went downhill.. we ordered the soy & mirin glazed black cod and the daily special which was shrimp on a bed of bloood orange paired with crab stuffed crepes with hollandaise on asparagus.... we thought these dishes sounded very tasty but we both felt we could have made it at home. The entrees lacked savor and were not very impressive. The banana bread pudding dessert was above average but not something I would go back for. Pass on the creme brulee... also very disappointing. Wished I'd spent that $$ somewhere else....
poor service. The food was decent. We try out a lot of restaurants all over the world and the food was 7/10 by our standards. The view was good and we had been there for a lunch visit prior. So we decided to plan a special occasion dinner. .First when we made reservations, we asked for a window seat. When we noted this upon our arrival, the hostess said no we could not have a window seat. We got there and the window seats were empty for 1/2 an hour. Another couple came in, were showed to a seat without a window ,noted the same thing and asked for the window seat and were finally given it. The person who took reservations at our first visit for lunch had told us there were no reservations on a certain day. When we called back there were plenty of reservations. We were told there were no booster seats for children, assumed no children were allowed so obtained a babysitter for our very well behaved, restaurant savvy 5 year old. Then we got there, noticed other much younger children present with booster seats. The food was not as good as what we had expected reading the reviews. To add to all of this, they forgot the appetizer and when this was mentioned finally brought it out after the main course. Also the sommelier brought out the wrong wine which we noticed once we read the label. The actual server herself was pleasant but everyone else was a bit snooty. What could have been a great night was ruined by the service.
Worth the Trip!.
I just moved to the city and Butterfly was the first place I dined - it was amazing! I was blown away by the view (it is right on Pier 33) because from the street you don't realize what a great view they have. We arrived at dusk in time to see some sea lions playing in the water while we sat in the lounge to have a drink and some happy hour apps.
Our server was attentive and friendly and the food was sooo good. I suggest the Cowboy Steak - anyone that thinks a California-Asian restaurant can't prepare an awesome (and large!) steak....you are very wrong. The only drawback to our night was the restaurant gets a bit noisy when its packed....overall, it was an amazing evening! I heard they have lunch and brunch; I am definitely going back.
BOOORRRRIIINNGGG!!!!!. I've been to Butterfly many times before and it had a great bar scene. Atmosphere was great and good looking people. I recently went there with a couple buddies and the place looks like it has changed. It is no longer the fun, loud bar crowd that I am used to. Place was dead on a Saturday night. We sat at the bar to have a few drinks and snacks. The bartender was sooooo boring with no personality that we just paid the bill and left. Unless things change here, I don't think I will be coming back. I'd have a better time hanging out at Bubba Gumps.
Best steak ever!!. Walking into Butterfly, I was afraid that I was in for the small plate experience my girlfriend loves. After ordering a few appetizers I realized that the food came in generous portions. The kalua pig in lettuce cups was incredible! My girlfriend ordered the tuna, rare of course, and I had the cowboy steak. The tuna filet was a huge chunk of meat, and the cowboy steak could have been shared by two people with smaller appetites. After all of this food I could not resist the dessert menu. The banana bread pudding was so moist and delicious! This wonderful food was only an accent to the beautiful views and courteous service. It was a great night and I'll definitely be returning!
