Who doesn't love ooey, gooey grilled cheese? This place has mastered the perfect sandwich to a T. Don't be afraid to think outside the box: the macaroni and cheese sandwich is to die for and the jalapeno goat cheese combination is out of this world.

Grilled Cheese. Period.. Would love to hit this place before a Giants night game but unfortunately they aren't open for dinner. Tony, who cuts my hair wouldn't stop talking about this place, to the point where I HAD to go there for lunch after getting my hair cut.

Its a great environment--seating inside and outside (luckily the sun usually comes out in SoMa) and friendly staff, although they slightly messed up my order and added turkey. My sandwich was still delicious--I had the Mushroom Gruyere and loved it. I don't even like mushrooms!

Would love to go back and try the breakfast grilled cheese sandwiches.

And, if I could go back in time, I would have thought up this genius idea myself.

Citysearch Editorial Review. Bright and cheery, this new sandwich spot in SOMA's South Park neighborhood should be a great addition for nearby workers in search of lunch-- if they can handle the sticker shock. Despite prices in the $8-9 range, American's sandwiches are far from large, and are accompanied by only a small cluster of grapes. There's lots of flavor to be found in those tiny confines, though: the buttery Mushroom Gruyere combines a duxelle-like mushroom filling with rich layers of Fontina and Gruyere, while the Moscone adds a pop of salty olive tapenade to the classic tomato-mozzarella-pesto combination. A selection of housemade sodas in flavors like grapefruit-pink peppercorn ($3) were tasty, and there's a smoky tomato soup to dip your sandwich into on cooler days ($8 for a soup and half-sandwich combo). The young, enthusiastic staff and the completely compostable lineup of tableware are also nice additions. All in all, the American Grilled Cheese Kitchen is a treat for sandwich lovers, but one that may end up having priced and/or portioned itself out of the regular rotation of SOMA office drones.
