Citysearch Editorial Review. It takes guts to open a fancy French restaurant in the gritty 6th Street corridor, but with City Hall trying to revive Mid-Market and Show Dogs thriving just down the street, Passion Café has picked a good time to give it a shot. The century-old, meticulously restored building, with exposed brick walls and plenty of elegant candlelight, is transporting, and a gorgeous (and rare in this city) rooftop deck should be a great asset when warmer weather rolls in. Sadly, it seems that Passion's owners have given more thought to contracting than cuisine. The menu of French standards pretty much revolves around what can be reheated, evidenced by a limp croque-monsieur ($6). Amid quiches, tartines, sandwiches, and other bakery fare, the only real hot dish was boeuf bourgignon ($14)--a decent midday menu, but sorely lacking for dinner. Food and drink prices are reasonable, and service is friendly, but spotty. Hopefully, the folks behind Passion will make the most of this gorgeous building by hiring a real chef. In the meantime, keep it in mind for a late-afternoon rooftop drink.
