Citysearch Editorial Review. In the creamy confines of what used to be the Café Majestic, Uptown Joe's is an unapproved offshoot of the old-school Italian institution Original Joe's. Opened by former employees of the latter, Uptown Joe's offers an almost identical menu of classic red-sauce Italian fare (chicken piccata, eggplant parmegiana, even a "Joe's Special"), though at a significant price increase. Then again, the elegant dining room inherited from the Majestic merits a markup: with crème, brocade and ornate mirrors lining the walls and crystal chandeliers dotting the ceiling, it would've worked well for a celebratory scene in Goodfellas. The wine list is better than average, with more than 15 sold by the glass, and the music is Sinatra. Behind the cozy bar, look for an old-time San Franciscan happy to regale customers with stories about The City.
