Just off Clement St. in the Richmond district, the windows in Prime Rib Shabu’s small, dimly-lit dining room start fogging up early every evening, as huge bowls of steaming broth are brought out to happy, beer-laden tables full of shabu-shabu lovers. The entrée choices are few--prime rib, lamb, or veggies--but the quality of the meat and the bounty of veggies ((lettuce, watercress, chrysanthemum and Napa cabbage) are a cut above your typical hot-pot restaurant's. All get cooked in the same house-made broth, and benefit from the chef's special dipping sauce (soy sauce with jalapeños, fresh cilantro and spring onions). The $26 all-you-can-eat dinner (once a weekly special, and now offered nightly due to popular demand) is always the best bet.
