SF coffee chain expands to Van Ness.. Coffee is one of those necessities generally purchased from whichever hub happens to be closest to home or work, but since Philz boasts six locations through the Bay Area, chances are there's one nearby. The Civic Center site offers the same amenities that the first Mission store popularized: an encyclopedic billboard of coffees you can have brewed by the cup and made to your specifications, an assortment of both savory and sweet baked goods, free Wi-Fi for the telecommuting masses and plenty of table and couch seating. Philz' niche is the focus on coffee more than frou-frou espresso drinks; Phil himself customizes all the blends from beans around the globe, and an employee prepares your cup depending on how strong, creamy and sweet you generally take your joe. Even if Philz isn't around the corner, the shop's attention to detail and quality may make it worth a trek across town.
