A primo Italian chef puts a new spin on Old World.. At Redwood City's Donato Enoteca, guests have a variety of dining options to choose from. The only common denominator here is authentic Italian cuisine as prepared by chef Donato Scotti, whose Palo Alto restaurant, La Strada, has been a hallmark of real-deal Italian fare since 2006. On the outside, Donato conveys a pre-fabricated feel, like a restaurant in a upscale strip mall, but so do most places in Redwood City. The long, narrow, meticulously appointed interior, however, transports diners to a sunny enoteca in Tuscany. For a more casual evening, guests can sit at the bar overlooking the kitchen or at a host of tables up front. In the center of the restaurant, a slick bartender in a starched-white shirt greets guests with high-end grappa, classic Italian cocktails like negronis and martinis, and a veritable offering of Italian, French, and American wines. On the patio outside, Donato has arranged couches and tables that seem perfect for an early evening drink, while in the back of the restaurant, an immaculate dining room offers guests a more formal Italian experience.
