The French Influence – When the Metro Cafe on Divisadero closed last year we regular patrons were at a loss to find good French food within walking distance. Then L'Ardoise opened on Noe Street, offering an excellent menu of delicious dishes, but at prices that seemed to make it a destination restaurant. And then a few months later we discovered Bistro St. Germain on Haight Street. with sparkling-new, tasteful decor, a warm and friendly staff, and an authentic French atmosphere throughout. The menu is varied; a daily Prix Fixe for $20 (three courses) is a bargain. The soups are luscious, and the portions generous. There are FOUR different mussels dishes at $9 each. I have been there five times, and found the Moules Meuniere and the Moules Brettone to be irresistible. My adult children each ate a dozen raw oysters, with great relish; it was a treat to see these two, who used to live on nothing but hamburgers and french fries, downing the slippery creatures.

The halibut is delicious, and it is always fun to hear the French people pronounce that word. The Osso Buco was superb. Salads are simple but brilliant -- try the beet salad for something different. Green salad is better than in Paris. Two of my dining companions enjoyed escargot, {but as a California backyard gardener I could never eat a snail).

The desserts here are splendid: REAL creme brulée, a dreamy chocolate confection, excellent profiteroles. An excellent wine list makes the whole experience memorable.

The meal requires a whole evening, so allow plenty of time to enjoy it. The service is excellent but unrushed, to say the least. The chef requires time to prepare authentic French dishes, and there are no shortcuts.

Classic French bistro fare in the Lower Haight. – Formerly a constantly deserted Lower Haight Thai spot, St. Germain is the reasonably priced, simple neighborhood French bistro this area has been missing. The space was given a quick French bistro treatment--a mural of Parisian landmark silhouettes, bottles of Moet and Roderer, faux-antique tin placards for Cointreau, Chimay and Absinthe--and quickly began drawing crowds of Lower Haight locals and, reassuringly, more than a few actual French people. The menu is all French classics: oysters ($1.50 each), escargot ($6), mussels ($9), roast chicken and fish entrees (about $15) tarte tatin ($6), prices that reflect the neighborhood's preference for casual, unpretentious eats. The servers all speak French, "bonjour," "bon app├ętit," etc., and are generally swift and attentive. Good for a Friday night date, or a bowl of moules frites and a glass of wine on a foggy walk home from work, St. Germain already feels like it belongs where it is.
