This beer-appreciation bar, like its brew-worshipping brethren La Trappe and Monk's Kettle, elevates the once-lowly everyman elixir to levels of connoisseurship once reserved for the snobby fops ridiculed by people who drink lots of beer. Church Key is owned and tended to by Jason King, himself an avid beer-enthusiast so affable that many who meet him leave having become Jason King-enthusiasts. There is only a key for a sign and it's the easiest place in the world to miss. I was looking right at it and still didn't see it until I checked a piece of paper that I wrote the address on.
They have an excellent selection of beers without the pretense of La Trappe or Monks kettle. I had the quadrupple at 11% ABV and enjoyed the hell out of it. This is my new favorite place in North Beach.

This is a small sister bar to the Excelsior's Broken Record--what BR does for whiskey, these guys do for beer.
What to Eat:
Check out the traditional English meat pies made with wild game (another similarity to Broken Record's famous sausages).
Know Before You Go:
Depending on business, the bar's been known to stay open until 2am on Thursday, Friday and Sunday.
