With a few fine touches like Niman Ranch steak and Newcastle cheddar sauce, this Mission cheesesteak shop hits the spot, even with Philly purists who like their sando "Whiz wit.".
A long, thin bun stuffed with onions and "steak," slathered in Cheesewhiz and more often than not served to you by a hairy arm sticking out of a meat truck, the authentic Philly is an example of debatable perfection. Phat Philly's gets its Amoroso rolls shipped in from Philadelphia and the Whiz option for purists, but uses sustainably-raised hormone-free meat, and is set up like a classic 50's soda-fountain-and-grill--think Johnny Rockets, without the paper hats and force-fed Americana. Further departures from the Philly meat truck-model include veggie options, salads and house-made sauces (cheddar beer made w/ Newcastle, BBQ made with Mr. Pibb). While perhaps not as chunky as the name implies, Phat Philly's cheeseteaks are as authentic as you want them to be.
