Skewered chicken gizzards may not sound like a popular snack, but witnessing the sheer number of these salty sticks emerging from the kitchen is enough to prove otherwise. Sure, the menu includes ramen, a few rice bowls and a handful of fairly predictable appetizers, but diners pack this restaurant's narrow dining space bedecked in '60s rock memoribilia for the yakitori: a grilled Japanese street snack traditionally made primarily from chicken (every imaginable part, mind you) but here also available in skirt steak, bacon-wrapped scallops, shitake mushrooms and more than a dozen other items. There's also a kushi-katsu menu--similarly skewered meats and veggies battered, deep fried and served with a housemade vinegary brown sauce and wasabi mayo. Doesn't everything taste better on a stick?
The Details on Halu
The Extras:
The music here is as much a part of the experience as the food: don't fight the volume of the Beatles' tracks, sing along.
Look Good:
Don't clutter your plate with discarded sticks, put them in the tall, vase-looking cups available on every table.
Know Before You Go:
The kitchen is small and the owner/chef can only move so fast, so be prepared to wait. Dishes come out as they're finished, not all together, so it's best to share.
