Hidden gem. Poc Chuc is one of the few worthwhile BYOs in SF. It also happens to serve fantastic Mayan cuisine (think turkey). It's tucked away below Mission on 16th, which keeps the Marina away. Even Mission pros don't appear to know much about the Chuc. And here I am, posting about it.
Delicious!. If you yen for the delicious food you had in Mexico (not Baja but real Mexico) this is the place for you. Wonderful Pollo Pibil, flavorful and not over the top anything but flavor. Warm and friendly service, ever refilled large glasses of iced tea, but also all the wonderful Mexican fruit drinks. I have only been there once but the menu reads really well, lots of things sound good and I can't wait to go back
No matter what they call it, it's a cozy spot in the Mission to experience food from the Yucatan..
In Short
The restaurant formerly known as Popul Vuh and Chichen Itza still sits inconspicuously on a lonely block in the Mission, but those familiar with Yucatecan cuisine and its Mayan-Spanish blends will recognize the latest name as an aromatic dish of citrus-marinated pork. The eponymous entree is one of the most popular at Poc Chuc, but meat eaters enjoy the entire menu of unique flavors in addition to the warm colors and soft lighting of the anti-taqueria.
